Short Answer: No, not really.
Fat reducing pills are very popular in both the bodybuilding world and among people trying to lose weight.
The Internet has made such supplements and medicines more accessible to people that would not normally think to buy them, and few people question if they are effective or safe, before buying online.
There are several types of diet pill on the market now. There are fat blockers which actively reduce fats from the foods you eat from being absorbed through the wall of the digestive tract, reducing the amount of energy (calories) you take in. Similarly there is a drug which blocks the uptake of carbohydrate. Neither of these pills are really safe in the long term and both have some side effects which are not very pleasant. Some drugs are positively unsafe, DNP is an example. DNP kills and is illegal, but people are still taking it to aid weight loss.
Fat burning pills work a little differently in that they are designed to increase metabolism that more fat can be lost. Most often fat burning pills are used by bodybuilders prior to competitions when “cutting” is most important. How the pills work to increase metabolism varies, but most contain a chemical concoction of caffeine, guarana, green tea and other ingredients which have been shown to possibly aid an increase in fat burning.
Are Fat Reducing Pills Safe?
Although losing fat can be simpler and easier with the correct advice and nutritional products, it is absolutely essential that fat burning pills are only taken by people that are working out intensively on a regular basis. The pills should never be taken by people that are looking for an easy way to lose some weight. At best they just will not work, and at worse they could lead to side effects and ill health.
What Is A Fat Burner?
Most people know that to lose weight, you need to eat less and exercise more. The problem is that dieting can be a physical and mental torture! A fat burner helps you move towards your weight management goals, as part of your diet and training regime.
Do Fat Burning Pills Work?
OK, so they may not be totally safe, but do they actually work as claimed? To answer that, we first, we need to look at what they are.
A fat burner helps you to mobilize and burn fat when used in conjunction with a sensible diet and exercise program. What this means is that the pills help encourage your body to break down more fat tissue for energy. However, the science is not conclusive – there is no solid evidence that they are effective, most of the claims are from individuals that believe they have helped.
For example, Maximuscle’s best selling fat-burner Thermobol contains ingredients that research shows could increase fat loss. This will help you feel more in control when restricting calories, helping to support your weight management goals.
Should You Use A Fat Burner?
If you’re training hard and still finding it difficult to lose weight, or you’re frustrated by the fact that the weight is not coming off quickly enough, a fat burner could help you reach your weight management goals more quickly.
One of the features of a fat burner is that it raises your psychological and nervous energy levels – you can become highly strung. This is designed so that you exercise with a greater intensity and therefore burn more energy.
This is the thermogenesis effect – you get hotter and work harder to burn more. It is argued that positive thinking and mental preparation before exercise can have a similar effect. In fact, much of sports and athletics coaching involves working on the psychological aspect of training to reach peak performance.
However, some research has shown that “bioactive components may support weight maintenance after a hypocaloric diet” (Belza, 2006).
Likewise, research into the effects of a green tea supplement shows it “enhances exercise-induced changes in abdominal fat” (Maki et al, 2009), i.e. you must exercise for it to be effective.
Are Fat Reducing Pills Safe?
There are many risks associated with taking these kinds of medications. Fat blockers in particular have some negative side effects, including stomach aches, diarrhea, and a tendency to interfere with other medications, notably birth control and estrogen supplements. They can also encourage undernourishment as they often block the absorption of lots of fat-soluble vitamins.
Some of these medicines are high in substances like caffeine, which can have a negative effect on the heart. These medications also don’t help slimmer to re-learn appropriate eating habits.
If you are looking to lose some extra fat, and are exercising on a regular basis, then fat burning pills such Maximuscle’s Thermobol can help to speed up metabolism to burn fat. Some products such as CLA-1000 also help to break down fat.
Typical Side Effects of Fat Burning Supplements
- Caffeine – anxiety, sleep disruption, confusion, headaches, seeing flashes, tinnitus, mania and psychosis (rare and with very high doses).
- Guarana – insomnia, headaches, nervousness, anxiety, heart palpitations and high blood pressure.
- Green Tea Extract – restlessness and insomnia
- CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) – linked to increased risk factors for heart disease
- Chromium – anemia, memory loss and DNA damage linked with chromium picolinate.
- Chitosan – gas, bloating and diarrhea. Malnutrition possible due to blocking of fat soluble vitamins.
- Ephedrine– hypertension, heart palpitations, acne, anorexia, urinary tract problems, confusion, insomnia, delusions, paranoia, panic attacks, headaches and dizziness, plus many more. The worse know side effects recorded have been “stroke, heart attack, and death” (FDA, 2004). Seek medical advice before going near this stuff.
Really it is for the consumer to weigh up the risks and benefits and decide if fat reducing pills are safe for them. There is no sure answer. The best answer is to adopt a healthy diet and do plenty of quality exercise. If you do decide to experiment with a fat burning supplement it is wise to keep a diary and note any unusual feelings or behavior. Increased aggression, anxiety, sleeplessness or paranoia and confusion could all indicate a problematic side effect of one of the ingredients and stopping the supplements immediately is the only recommended course of action.
Following a well structured weight loss system that emphasis both diet and exercise is the best way for most people to lose weight. However, many people intent on looking for the quicker, easier option, and if you are working out hard, then a fat burner may work well for you.
Diet Pills Kill Woman – The Dangers of Too Much Caffeine
This is not actually breaking news and we are not aware of any recent deaths. However, on researching the relationship of caffeine and health I came across a report from the journal of Veterinary & Human Toxicology that reported a death due to caffeine overdose. Although deaths from excess caffeine are rare, they do happen, and with more products flooding the market containing caffeine, these deaths are likely to continue. This gives rise to a larger question, are diet pills really safe? It is a subject that we have covered already, however, the risk of death from caffeine overdose was not considered.
A 22 year-old female was rush to accident and emergency after suffering a heart attack. Her heart attack came on after consuming too many diet pills that she had purchased online. These pills were of a thermogenic nature, designed to increase metabolism by raising heart rate. For this woman the result triggered a heart attack that killed her.
Cause of Death: Caffeine
A post-mortem examination revealed that she had a caffeine level of 1,560 micrograms/ml in her blood. The lethal limit is considered to be 100 micrograms/ml. Her caffeine levels were 15 times higher than the fatal level. How did she manage to accomplish this? No other substances were found in her blood and her death was attributed to acute caffeine toxicity.
Thermogenic Diet Pills and Fat Burners
Thermogenic diet pills are popular for one reason – they are currently legal to be sold over the counter, without prescription. The only diet pills to really work, such as fat blockers and carb blockers, have not passed testing or have had to be withdrawn from the market due to serious side effects. The thermogenic ones remain because so far they have not resulted in many fatalities.
The idea really is that by taking a thermogenic diet pill you increase your heart rate and metabolism to encourage you to exercise. Studies have found that when you consume caffeine you will workout with a greater intensity. Many athletes and bodybuilders drink black coffee in the morning before their cardio sessions for this reason. Although it is not known what happened in the case reported in Veterinary & Human Toxicology, there is a real risk that not exercising could be the cause of the highly elevated levels.
How Much Caffeine is Safe?
Over-the-counter caffeine tablets generally contain up to 100 mg of caffeine. In 2004 Sweden put a restriction on caffeine tablets, limiting the number that could be bought without prescription to just 30 at a time. This was in response to deliberate caffeine overdosing.
“Overdoses of tablets containing caffeine can be fatal, suicides as well as accidents occur.” (Thelander et al, 2010).
The study by Thelander reported the case of a 21-year-old woman who had taken 10 grams of caffeine (100 tablets). She called the ambulance afterwards and was taken to hospital but no problems were seen. Just as she was leaving hospital she collapsed after developing ventricular fibrillations (irregular and inefficient heart contractions). After 30 minutes her heart was restored but she suffered several more attacks afterwards. Doctors eventually stabilized her, but after being in hospital for 13 days in intensive care she deteriorated and died. The caffeine overdose essentially destroyed her heart, or her ability (the brain’s subconscious influence) to control her heart.
The same study looked at the toxicological results of 20 deaths attributed to caffeine overdose and in 2 of the cases ephedrine was found in the blood. Ephedrine is another chemical used in fat burners and stimulants designed to help people to lose weight.
How Much Caffeine in Over-the-Counter Pills?
Here are a selection of “fat burners” chosen at random by searching for “far burners” in Google Shopping results on 21st November 2011. Caffeine data taken from the product websites.
- Maximuscle Thermobol, 90 capsules. 153 mg caffeine each.
- Twinlab Ripped Fuel Extreme, 60 capsules, 220 mg caffeine each.
- Nutrex 1158 Nurtex Research Fat Burner LiPo, 120 capsules – 200 mg Caffeine Anhydrous USP each.
- Forza T5 Super Strength Fat Burners – 60 caps, 200 mg Caffeine each.
As you can see, each of these contains more capsules than the Swedish government allow to be sold on health grounds. Just 50 of the Nutrex capsules will provide 10000 mg (10 gram) of caffeine, the same amount that killed the healthy woman who Thelander and co wrote about in 2010.
Although the advice is to take one fat burner / thermogenic pill per day, some people do not read the labels and think that taking more will result in more fat burning. This is why care has to be taken as accidental overdoses do occur, and people tend to think that it is not possible to overdose on over-the-counter medicine. It is highly unlikely that anyone would take 50 fat burners in one go, however, currently the safe lower limit is not known.
How Effective is Caffeine?
Caffeine is certainly a stimulant, but does it really improve performance? Graham and Spriet (1991) examined the effect of caffeine on endurance athletes and concluded that neither cyclists nor runners saw any improvements in respiratory exchange ratio (used to measure fat burning) or plasma free fatty acid data (an indicator of total fat oxidation / fat burning) at rest or during exercise.
Some studies, such as the one by Namdar and colleagues in 2006 showed that caffeine actually reduces blood flow to the heart and may impair athletic performance. As little as 2 cups of coffee reduces exercise-induced myocardial flow reserve at normoxia. Myocardial flow reserve is the rate at which blood can flow through the heart, and so impacts on the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the muscles during exercise.
Caffeine has been shown to help muscles recover after exercise, but it is also responsible for increasing cholesterol levels.
So, care must be taken if you are considering taking fat burners that contain caffeine, caffeine based energy drinks or lots of coffee. Although coffee does seem to have some advantages and positive effects on health and fitness, there are also some serious side effects of having too much caffeine.
So, are there safe fat burning supplements? While none are dangerous as such, none can be considered totally “safe”, as all have side effects. Caffeine overdose is possible, as mentioned above. People with heart conditions or high blood pressure should avoid fat burning pills.
For most people reading this, and that includes you, a combination of exercise and healthy eating is all that is required.

what might be the possible side effects?
when I google it…almost every problem is listed…BP,heart issues,headaches,acne…etc..

I don’t have any major health issue as of now(thank god)
Read the label of the product that you chose, do not rely on what is written on websites other than the official website of the manufacturer. Products changes all the time, many websites are out of date. Speak to a pharmacist, they will be able to give you the best explanation for any product – they should do this for free.
Ok I was on Dialysis 5 years had a transplant 3 years ago was diagnosed with trauma based Multiple Sclerosis 1 1/2 years ago. Because of my MS I am struggling to exercise as I am without energy most days and what little I do tends to be short walks which leave me exhausted and in pain before my MS I was 75Kg I amd now 102Kg ideally I am trying to lose 20Kg but I am on a cocktail of drugs some of which are steroids and I struggle to exercise as stated above. What would you suggest as I was considering asking my Doctor for a medical aide to help me out.
Hi Danny, I think you are right, ask your doctor. With your medical history and current medication I would not like to suggest anything other than that.
Hello,
I am 28 years old, i am going to gym from last 6 months,4 days a week however my weight has only reduced by 1kg(86-85). i have done my thyriod test and everything is normal. tried many diet plan but nothing is working out. my trainer told me that gyming is not suiting my body. pls help and let me know the reason why my weight is not reducing and is that possbile that gyming is not suiting my body? even i am surprised that i have lost only 1kg in 6 months.
I have lost hopes that i will ever loose weight.
Hi Rida, first you should ask your trainer for a better explanation – this really does not make any sense to me so I cannot comment on why your trainer said that working out is not for you.
The only reason why anyone ever fails to lose weight, including those with thyriod problems, diabetes, more obesogenic genes etc. is that too much food is eaten. You will not be an exception to this rule.
You mention that no diet plans worked for you. If that is the case then you need to just eat a healthy and balanced diet but reduce portion sizes. Cut out all snacks too – you obviously do not need them if you have not lost weight during 6 months of exercise.
Keep a food diary (log everything you eat and drink) and then review it with a high lighter pen and mark all foods and drinks that are “snacks” or signs of emotional eating. Then take steps to remove these temptations from your view.
hi
i have a small baby of 1 and half year. i don’t have time fr gym can anyone suggest me fat reducing pills coz m highly overweight plz help!!!!
Hi Sonu, pills will not solve your problems. You need to improve your diet and get active.
hi any suggestion and guidance are welcomed. badly need to reduce.
Start following a healthy diet, see out diet and nutrition section. Exercise every single day
Hi! I’m 17 years old and I’m planing to join the gym for 2 whole months. I’m 5’10 and weigh 69 kg. I still have my puppy fat, and I have extremely huge hips and arms. Also I have a stomach fat that I try working on but there’s been no difference. I was wondering if taking fat burners could accelerate the process of losing weight. And what diet do you suggest for two complete months?
Hi Sasha. Firstly, you do not have “puppy fat” – you are 17 years old!
2 months? To get fit and stay fit, you have to make exercise a part of your life. It is not a short term solution.
Fat burners will not help you. You need to change your diet and get exercising.
Aim to exercise once per day, every day. Eat 3 meals, not snacks, and make sure each meal is well balanced and healthy. No junk food, no sodas, no high calorie drinks.
Hi,
I do excercise regularly. is it safe for me to take some fat burner pills as i dont see any significant reduction in my stomach size? if yes, how i should take this? i mean before going to gym or it has a set time to take these pills.
please reply.
Hi Harmohit, we cannot advise you on that. All we can suggest is that you read the labels on the fat burning pills to make yourself fully aware of any possible side effects before making your decision on whether or not to use them.
But, if you have not adjusted your diet (eating less!) and tried to improve your fitness (more exercise, more often, greater intensity) then taking some pills is not going to help.
i really want to know, after taking a fat burning pill does the person have to work out to or what? I really want an answer. Please!!!!!!!!!!
Hi khatchig, you really should read the article. Yes, you have to workout, before and after. You also need to fix your diet. Without exercise and healthy diet you will just suffer the side effects of the pills and not lose any weight.
Hi,
I exercise 4 times a week.I train very hard both weights and cardio but the fat from my stomach is not going away. I am thinking if I should use a stomach fat burner to get rid of the fat and to discontinue it when I get the results I’m looking for. Can you advise me what to do? My current weight is 125 pounds.
Hi Stacy, did you change your diet? To lose your stomach fat you need to change your diet. Pro boxers even have to watch what they eat to meeet a specific weight, and they train for 6-8 hours a day.
hi
is their any side effect of not getting pregnant after wedding ???
Hi Hum, no, no side effect at all!
I took 3 FLASH POINT sublingual FAT BURNER as a sample in a GNC at the mall 33 second absorbing type. Also bought a bottle on sale. On the ride home from the mall I noticed a small knot on my neck, unrelated to the pills but I became convinced it was a terrible disease. Never been a hypochondriac. Doctor checkup said it was just cartilage and all annual check up fine. Over the next 3 moths I took about 20 or so tablets on and off and stopped working out, developed total mania. I was certain phones were tapped etc. I went for mental health check up. Paranoid and depression was the diagnosis. After a few moths of not taking anything but multi-vitamins all was well. Then in August I took one tablet and had a horrible month. Back to the therapist. I did not even consider the diet pill at this point. One month later no meds all fine. At the beginning of January my resolution to workout, started and I took 2 sublingual flash point tabs, within a few hours I was feeling the paranoia again. After one month mental misery all is clear again. when I look back, I feel totally stupid for the fearful thoughts. Like a different person. I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience. NEVER TAKING THOSE AGAIN. Almost 40 years old and never had extreme paranoia prior to this. No DUI’s do not drink or do drugs, zero run ins with the law etc.
Hi July, that is pretty scary. Did the label say anything about these possible side effects? If not you should contact the company and the FDA (if you are in America) as this information needs to be logged for health and safety reasons.
OK, just done a little extra research. It seems that FlashPoint contains: 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine (caffeine anhydrous), beta-phenylethylamine hcl, hordenine hcl, synephrine, evodiamine, yohimbine hcl.
One of the possible side-effects of Phenylethylamine is psychiatric or neural disorders. It escapes the controls of the FDA because it is a “natural compound”, however, medical professionals are aware of its risks. Advice is to consult with a doctor before taking it.
Seems you have done well to avoid it as you are one of the people prone to develop the more serious side effects.
hi, my name is sandip biswas. I am 23 years old. Started to go gym before last two month. But am not getting me weight loss. Til now my weight is 75 kg. I don’t know what i will do?am doing gym every day 2hrs. in morning. for that happened today my gym trainer told me to take fat burning pills. But i am thing is have any side effects of that pills?pls give me reply….
Hi Sandip, if your gym trainer is telling you to get fat burning pills then this could be a sign that you need a new gym trainer. Lift more weights, perform more intensive workouts (interval training etc.) and make sure your diet is super lean and clean.
I started doing gym for the last 9 months, 1 hrs a day four times a week for losing weights, I am 83 kgs now and i’m 28 years but till now my weight does not come down and if so also within 79 – 80 kgs. My problem is diet please advice me want to reach 65 – 70 kgs
Hi Nask, first read this: Our Essential Guide To Healthy Eating. Then order this eBook: Low GI Diet Plan – From MotleyHealth. Read book, follow diet plan. And exercise every day. Do some cardio, some weight training, some HIIT, some long endurance sessions.
Hi, I am 27yrs old & my weight is 86kgs. I have been going to the gym for the past 2months around 4days a week for 2hrs each, 1hr for cardio & 1hr for weight lifting.I havent made much progress as far as weight reduction is concerned. I dont have any personal trainer to help me. Recently my friend told me in order to lose weight and build more muscle I need to take fat burning pills along with protein supplement. I’m not too sure to if I should take his advice. Help! & and pls let me know what I need to do to get better results and which supplements should be consumed, if any? Thanx
hi
i am a 21 year girl and i have been gymming for the past 1 and a half yrs. i have been working out vigorously for 1-2and 1/2 hrs, 6 days a week. The initial 15 kgs i lost way too easily and now my weight has become stable since the last 3-4 months…i have been moderately conscious about my diet as well..now that i have joined a new gym, my instructor has advised me to take CLENBUREXIN and he terms it safe for women. I always have believed in losing weight the natural weight but now this scheme and its reviews online have created a dilemma. please help
Hi AJ, your friend is talking nonsense. There were fit and strong people long before the invention of either fat burners of protein supplements. If your goal is to be healthy, you need a balanced diet – fat burners tend to screw with this. If your goal is to lose fat, you need to reduce calories – protein supplements tend to screw with this.
Make sure you are getting some protein in each meal – e.g. eggs for breakfast; chicken and fish lunches; nuts, pulses, cottage cheese, lean meats etc. with meals. Also take in vegetables and fruits. Cut out all junk, most bread, all other baked foods (cookies, cakes, pastries, pies etc.)
Mix up your workouts – don’t just do the same lifts and cardio each day. Do some interval training, use the bikes, rowers, treadmills, cross trainers – work different muscle groups. Do some free weights as well as machines. Challenge yourself – aim to lift more weight each week, do more miles on the machines. Keep working that body.
Hi PJ, we are not familiar with Clenburexin, but there are a few concerns based on the instructions on the Amazon page:
It is a Thermogenic, it stimulates the body. If you do not exercise even harder than normal it is pointless taking it.
The product advises that you take it on empty half an hour before exercise. It is not generally advisable to workout on an empty stomach – your muscles will tire quickly and you will not be able to push yourself to a new level of fitness. The stimulating effect will be offset against that fact that you are not able to train so hard.
The warnings with the product, such as not suitable for children, pregnant or nursing woman, people with circulatory system problems or sensitivity to caffeine. Also not to be taken with alcohol.
It contains some “herbal” compounds which are stimulants. Some people will says that a double espresso before a workout will have the same effect, be cheaper and not cause sleep disruption.
Focus on getting fitter and you will naturally burn more energy each day – through increased cardio workouts and increased metabolism (more muscle).
HI. I’m 18 years old. I’m weighting 80 kg and want lo loose 15 kg. I go to gym 3 times per week. I want to take fat burner pills to get a quicker result. I don’t know which type of fat burner i have to take.
Ismael, to lose fat you need to firstly reduce total calories and increase exercise. Why take fat burners if you are only exercising 3 days a week – what are you doing on the other 4 days of the week?
How about natural fat burners without gluten or wheat and dairy free suitable for vegans and no packers, fillers or flow agents added?
Natural without wheat and dairy? Wheat and dairy are natural aren’t they? But, if you can share some scientific evidence that supports the idea that these fat burners aid weight loss then please do so. “Natural” ones may be safer, but whether or not they actually do anything worthwhile is another matter.
Exercising and building probably more muscle burns more fat than fat burners and has none of the unwanted side-effects (other than a little DOMS now and then).
Also, it is very important to point out that natural does not equal healthy. Belladonna and hemlock are natural but you would not want to eat them.
What does the scientific community say about natural weight loss pills?

Am just wondering why people who suffer from asthma can not take fat burners, is its all severities
Hi Peter, cannot answer that as I have not read that asthma sufferers specifically should not take fat burners. Ephedrine, which is commonly used in fat burners, is also used in asthma medication.
But, the bottom line is that fat burners are not really very effective. If they were, doctors would be prescribing them to obese and overweight patients.
Hi
i have a problem with my weight recently i have gained a lot of weight, instructor told me to take duromine to help me lose weight fast…is it safe for me to use it?
Duromine is a brand of Phentermine. It has several known side effects, including increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, palpitations, dizziness, insomnia, euphoria, dysphoria, tremors and headaches. There is a risk of psychological dependence. Rebound weight gain is common. As with any weight loss pill you need to go on a strict diet and exercise too.
It is also expensive – are you sure that your instructor is not on commission?
Is it safe? It is certainly not 100% safe.
hi im gourav i m a20 year old boy is fat burning pill is dengerous for health and my weigth is 120 kg
Hi Gourav, as we said previously, they can never be considered totally safe. There are side effects and different people respond on different ways. Make sure you read the label and understand the risks before taking anything.
how can i get the
fat burner
Which fat burner Sarah?
I don’t know about fat burners, but what about appetite suppressants supplements. Are they safe to take?
They too have side effects which can range from unpleasant to dangerous.
My weight has increasd too much according to my age.i go for fittnes center(gym)to reduce some fat.they adviced me about a fat cutter to use only 28 days.will it be useful or harmful?my age is 18 and i have acidity and high b.p problem(hereditary problem).pls mail me sme advices.
Souvik, we cannot advise you, other than to say read the information on the drugs, understand the known side effects and make your own judgement call. If you do decide to take the pills monitor your blood pressure every day and if the pills cause it to rise further you should probably stop.
Are T5 weight loss pills safe to take, i am 16 and considering taking these weight loss pills i also have epilepsy would this affect my condition i have been fit free for nearly 3-4 years?
Hi Gemma, there are risks with all pills. These are a thermogenic pill with appetite suppressant and may cause heart palpitations, anxiety, nervousness etc. T5 generally contain ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin so if you have any issues with these then you should not take.
The product description of one brand says:
“Not for individuals under the age of 18 years” and also says that if you have a medical condition to consult your doctor.
So, the recommendation is that you do not take them.
Are you exercising and eating a healthy diet?
many thanks for your article. I have now disposed off all my diet pills.
I am glad I came across the article.
thank you
Hi,
I’m a 20 yr old female, 5ft7 weighing 60kg. I am lean and active but struggling to lose some excess fat in problem areas, so looking to shred for some definition. I have a balanced diet already but know I could probably improve on it a little. I have ordered thermobol, but take green tea and or drink it every day. I also have beetroot supplements when exercising and acai berry capsules. Do you think the green tea or any other supplements I have listed in conjunction with thermobol would be bad? I.e high caffeine. And finally, what would you suggest would be beneficial?
Thanks
