8 Great Juice Recipes to Detox and Rejuvenate

A woman holding a selection of healthy vegetablesJuicing is a popular way to consume fruit. Although many advocates of juicing believe that it is the route to long life, health and happiness, we do not take the claims quite that far. But it is still very healthy!

The benefits of juicing over eating fruits is really simple – you can consume a greater variety of fruits and you can eat them quickly. It is not easy to take the goodness of a whole lemon without processing it prior to eating it!

Here we share a few juice recipes, starting with a classic apple, lemon and lime detox (although the actual effectiveness of any detox drink is disputed – water may be the best “detox”), then a fat burner (which is not as effective at burning fat than exercise) and some healthy green juices that are jam-packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants.

Feel free to share your own juice recipes below. Enjoy!

Apple, Lemon and Lime Detox Juice

Lemon and Lime DetoxDetoxing is a really simple process, only made complicated by the commercialization of diets and nutrition advice. So here we provide a simple detox juice that you can make at home, drink, and sit back and relax while your body rejuvenates. We could now talk about the importance of using locally grown, organic fruits, but really it makes little difference.

You should ideally make this fresh in the morning and drink before eating.

Apple, Lemon and Lime Detox Recipe

  • Apple Juice or 4 very juicy apples
  • 1 peeled lemon cut into 4
  • 1 or 2 peeled limes cut into 4
  • water to help blend

Juice them all up and drink immediately. If too thick add a little more water.

Benefits of the Apple, Lemon and Lime Detox Juice

  • Apples contain pectin which is a form of soluble fiber. This helps with the detox flush that removes cholesterol and toxins through the liver and kidneys.
  • The lemon and limes contain citric acid which help to remove waste and also have a slightly laxative effect.
  • Remember to store you citrus fruits at room temperature as this allows you to get the most juice from them.

Fat Burner Juice: Honey, Lemon, Ginger and Grapefruit

This refreshing juice is an excellent fat burner and also helps to regulate blood sugar levels, so helps to control hunger. All all round weight loss juice drink!

The ingredients contain digestive enzymes that help you to lose weight. It is best drunk first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This juice is also excellent to boost the immune system and help to ward off, or fight off, colds and flu.

  • Honey: Full of healthy enzymes and B vitamins, has antimicrobial properties, promotes the re-hydration of the body, cleanses the blood and contains antioxidants.
  • Grapefruit: Contains a fat burning enzyme and also lowers insulin levels and controls blood sugar levels. The pectin is also a great form of soluble fiber, so good for bowel problems.
  • Lemon: Helps to cleanse and detox. Also promotes a healthy liver and improves digestion, meaning less food is converted to fat.
  • Ginger: Helps to improve digestion by increasing secretions of digestive juices in the stomach. Also aids blood circulation and metabolism, increases the immune system and strengthens the internal organs of the digestive tract.

If you want to burn fat, then drinking this juice before every meals will help a little. The ingredients are also all very healthy providing a range of vitamins and minerals.

To make it simply take 2 grapefruits, 3 lemons a large piece of ginger and a tablespoon of honey, chop them all up and then add to a juicer. Add the honey and stir. Drink and cleanse!

Green Juice: Broccoli, Avocado and Pak Choi

This is another classic green juice, which is designed to rejuvenate, improve muscle function and reduce cholesterol. There are many benefits to drinking green juices. Probably the juice that Batman drinks!

  • Broccoli: An excellent source of calcium, and a source that is easy to absorb.
  • Avocado: A source of potassium, which is essential for muscle and nerve function.
  • Pak Choi: Not so easy to get hold of, but this Chinese cabbage is full of antioxidants and helps manage stress hormones.

To make it take 3 broccoli florets, 1 pak choi and 1 avocado. Chop them all, juice the pak choi and broccoli, then transfer to a blender and add the avocado. Blend until smooth. Drink.

Benefits of drinking this green juice are:

  • Improve muscle and nerve function
  • Strengthen bones
  • Reduce stress

Skin Rejuvenation Juice: Lemongrass, Carrot and Asparagus

This green juice contains a cocktail of nutrients that help to make the skin look younger.

  • Lemongrass: Strengthens skin cells and connective tissue and helps to tighten the skin, making it look and feel younger. It also aids lymphatic detoxification, which simply means it helps to cleanse the body of impurities.
  • Carrots: Vital for healthy blood cells and aids skin recovery.
  • Asparagus: One of the few sources of vitamin E which is essential for healthy skin.

This green juice drink also contains folic acid, beta-carotine, calcium, zinc plus many B vitamins.

To make it you need 4 large carrots, 10 asparagus spears and 1 stalk of lemongrass. Chop up all the ingredients, juice, stir, and drink. A refreshing start to the day, with a detox element, this green juice will fire you up and look after your health at the same time.

Cheryl Cole’s Carrot Juice Diet

There was a report in the Daily Star newspaper today that Cherly Cole is currently on a carrot juice diet. They report that she discovered carrot juice while visiting South Africa and drinks it help improve her skin tone, although it may also help to control calorie intake.

Raw carrot juice is very healthy, and unlike cooked carrots it is low GI too (cooking increases the GI of carrots).

A hotel worker where Cheryl stayed revealed that she ordered up to 6 glasses in a day and also ate smoked salmon.

The rumors are that Cheryl is trying to wean herself off junk food by going on a detox style diet. Juices are a great way to get healthy vitamins and minerals into the body quickly.

Why Carrot Juice?

Carrot juice contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin A
  • Folic acid (folate)
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Copper

Carrots are a very healthy vegetable and form part of a healthy diet. It is probably not right to say that Cherly Cole is on a “carrot juice diet” as she is eating other foods, but she does seem to be using carrot juice as a way to provide a healthy source of carbohydrates, along with obtaining healthy protein and fats from smoked salmon too.

Juicing gets a lot of mixed press really. When done sensibly juicing provides an easy and quick way to consume a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables which are very nutritious. However, some people do taking juicing too far and as a result they follow a very narrow and almost vegan like diet.

A healthy diet really does need to be well balanced with proteins and fats as well as carbohydrates. A juicing diet does not provide much in the way of proteins and fats though. Although to be fair to Cheryl Cole she was eating smoked salmon which contains both protein and healthy fats. However, it is still a limited diet.

When it comes to diet variety really is the spice to life. A varied diet will provide all the nutrients that you need. Rather than simply consuming the same small selection of vitamins, minerals and fats each day a healthy and varied diet provides you with foods from all the major groups over the course of a week.

The biggest danger of a carrot juice diet is that when taken to the extreme it will lead to malnutrition which can have a short term impact on your health with impaired concentration and energy levels, and may pose longer term health threats if the diet continues, such as the development of osteoporosis in later live due to a die lacking in calcium, proteins and fat.

Dannii Minogue’s Apple and Kale Weight Loss Diet

Dannii Minogue has sparked some new dieting interest recently with the news that she has lost all her baby weight with a new diet trick. She gave birth to a baby boy on 5th July 2010 and has already lost much of her baby weight.

It seems that Dannii is on a raw food diet that involves drinking kale juice and eating apples as snacks in between calorie controlled meals.

She is also exercising hard with lots of cardio work including running and aerobics exercises. She has not been seen doing any weight training though, so has obviously not learned the best way to lose weight yet.

The main weight loss plan is just eating a really healthy diet. She has no junk food at all, and there are no treat days (many weight loss programs allow treat days for the weak willed!). So 7 days a week she is exercising and eating a lean diet, with healthy fruits and vegetables, and snacking on apples and kale juice.

Snacking in between meals is a good idea as if you keep eating you keep your metabolism raised. This actually helps you burn more fat. But, and this is really important, you must make sure that the snacks are not adding to your strict calorie controlled diet. Any calories in snacks must be deducted from the meals you eat.

No Food After 6pm

Also, Danni is not eating anything after 6pm, and instead is using this time to exercise more. She is apparently a fan of the power plate in the evening as this is a quiet way to exercise that does not disturb her baby. However, if a baby is sleeping well it will not be woken by someone doing some circuit training or even working out to a dance DVD, so a power plate is not exactly an essential part of her weight loss plan.

Finally, remember that weight loss really is 80% diet and 20% exercise, so before you even start to shop for some new exercise shoes and workout clothes, sort the diet out.

Why Kale and Apples?

Kale is a type of cabbage. It has a lot of fiber and contains many nutrients and antioxidants. It is important to only eat highly nutritious vegetables if you are on a diet. If you only eat bread or pasta you will not be gaining any vitamins or minerals and will become weak. Kale is a great source of beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C and calcium.

Apples are another good fiber source and it is reported that apples can help with weight loss. This is because of the fiber. An average sized apple has around 5 grams of fiber, which is more than cereals contain. Apples contain no significant fat or cholesterol.

If you love apples then having an apple, lemon and lime detox drink is also a great way to help you lose weight.

Katie Price / Jordan Juicing Diet

Big Brother celeb and model Michelle Bass has recently lost weight after going on “Jordan’s Juicing Diet”. The diet was actually invented by Jason Vale (the Juice Master), who has published many books on the subject of juicing. The diet seems to be very simple indeed. Jordan (Katie Price) went on the diet after piling on the pounds after her son Junior was born.

UK juicing expert Jason Vale told Closer magazine, “it’s great that celebs like Michelle are having such great success on the programme, it is the easiest way to lose weight but importantly furnish your body with live nutrients giving you high energy levels and allowing your body to repair, detox and clear out some of the junk in your system.

Juicing diets have been around for a while now and then Jason Vale expanded on this success with a range of books detail every aspect of juicing. Juicing is simple, and the drinks taste so much better than anything bought in the supermarket. Fresh juice is not only good for you, but it tastes great.

Jason Vale’s success has now spread over to America, with Vale-fanatics Sarah Jessica Parker and Drew Barrymore by turning to him and his methods to control their weight.

  1. I made the Spice and Vitamin Booster for my husband last night as he had been feeling under the weather for the last few days, and it seemed to work. At least he felt a bit more lively in the evening or a few hours and was complaining less! I didn’t have any guarana powder – where can I buy that? He was not too pleased when I told him there was egg in it, but he still drank it down.

  2. MotleyHealth says:

You can buy guarana tablets in most health food stores, and Tesco do some too. The powder is common in Brazil, but we have not actually seen any around here. If anyone finds some, let us now. If you cannot get powder, take a tablet at the same time.

  3. is this detox as good as the lemon detox?
which is better for fast weight loss?

  4. MotleyHealth says:

Some would argue that it is better. As for weight loss, that really depends on you. A detox is really to cleanse the system, flush out toxins etc. It is not a way to lose weight, as you will be losing muscle tissue. Much better to exercise more. The best option really is to try both methods, lemon detox and this one, and see what works best for you.

  5. I am trying to loose weight, would this be a good detox method?

  6. MotleyHealth says:

Hi Patricia, yes it would. Start the day with one of these juices and eat a clean, low GI diet and you should see results.

  7. Abdelrahman Ahmad says:

Doesn’t the ginger cause stomach ulcers when it is drunk on an empty stomach? Are there any side effects?

  8. “Many experts and publications suggest that ginger powder, tablets, or capsules or freshly cut ginger can be used in doses of 1 to 5 grams daily, by mouth, divided into smaller doses.

There is evidence that ginger may increase stomach acid production. As a result, it theoretically may work against the effects of antacids, sucralfate (Carafate®), or anti-reflux medications such as H-2 blockers like ranitidine (Zantac®) or proton pump inhibitors like lansoprazole (Prevacid®). In contrast, other laboratory and animal studies report that ginger may act to protect the stomach.”

  9. MotleyHealth says:

In moderate amounts there are no problems. If you already have stomach ulcers then an acidic drink with ginger is not recommended.

  10. Can I do this before I go to work? I take public transport and am worried that I may need to go to the toilet quickly… Is there a timeframe in which I should do it? For example, an hour before I leave for work? Or will it gently flush the system out during the day?

Also, how many days a week can I do this?

  11. MotleyHealth says:

Hi Jules, this should not have that sort of effect on you, it is a healthy drink to help detox. You can still eat after drinking it. If in doubt try it first on a day when you are not rushing off anywhere. This is not a salt water flush that the lemonade diet is infamous for, just an apple-lemon juice drink.

  12. This juice sounds very interesting and I am willing to give it a try, but I was wondering, how is the ginger prepared for this juice? Is it boiled or what?

  13. MotleyHealth says:

chop it up and blend it in the juicer. If you find it to be too lumpy you could press it, or even buy a ginger pasta.

  14. Has anyone tried this with favorable results?

  15. Can this be consumed after a workout?

  16. MotleyHealth says:

    No reason why not Robert.

  17. I was wondering, is canned grapefruit juice good for you? Or do they add preservatives and things of the like to it?

  18. MotleyHealth says:

Hmmm, best check the label. If it had extra sugar or chemicals then it should say so.

  19. My daughter read abouth this she’s 11 right now and I was wondering if it was safe for her.

  20. Hey how old do ya gots ta be fer thiss?

  21. how long are you supposed to drink this and what comprises of a low gi diet?

  22. MotleyHealth says:

There are no rules to how much or how long you drink this. It is a healthy drink that may aid detox (if combined with a healthy diet). Learn about low GI diets here.

  23. From tomorrow I am going to start maple diet. But I do not know what is salt flush. Can you help me?
Is it okay if I take tabs for motion in the night instead of salt flush?
    Thank you

  24. MotleyHealth says:

Hi Lilly, the salt water flush is a top down enema. Full description is in the article above. Personally I would not recommend it though, it is very unpleasant. Better to eat more fiber and have a healthier diet!

  25. How often can this juice be taken and when? For example, should it be taken twice a day in the morning and at night?

  26. MotleyHealth says:

As often as you like really, so long as you factor in the calories in the juice and any intolerances you may have to excessive ginger.

  27. Hi! Should this juice be drank before each meal or just once a day?

  28. MotleyHealth says:

It is up to you. Many people have it in the morning before breakfast.

  29. *2nd time leaving this comment…w/no response*
I tried this recipe and I thought my blender would explode! I actually had to add water to get it going, the consistency was that of applesauce! Is this right? Also the amt. was astronomical, is it possible to cut the recipe in half and still get the same benefits?

  30. MotleyHealth says:

Hi Angie, sorry, not sure what happened to your previous message.

Yes, water is probably needed in most cases, we shall update the recipe. By all means reduce the ingredients too.

  31. okay first of all the maple syrup diet is definetly a no no. Its not good for you and can causes diarea. Thats how you lose weight by popping all day. I know people who have tried this diet and claim to faint on and off from lack of nutrition. The apple, lemon, lime drink is better off because you can eat during the day and you only make it in the morning . :) hope I can help.

  32. 4 apples?

  33. MotleyHealth says:

Yes, we have since written apple juice or 4 apples, as apples can vary widely on how much juice you get from them, which to be fair, often is not much. Tempted to remove the apples completely and just use apple juice.

  34. I want to start the maple diet, but I am not sure considering I am 5′ 115 lbs. I want to do a full cleanse from head to toe and this sounds perfect. I am scarred I might lose too much weight. What do you think may be the best for me?

  35. MotleyHealth says:

If you are concerned about losing too much weight then it is much better to just follow a healthy diet and do regular exercise. Fasting is not a healthy lifestyle choice and can lead to reduction in muscle mass as well as fat. If you maintain a healthy diet with no processed food, no junk food, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, then your body will “cleanse” itself anyway. A healthy diet is much better than a fasting cleanse.

  36. how much apple juice ? 1 cup? 4 cups?

And what quantity should be the end product? How many cups one should drink to get the right results for how many days.

  37. MotleyHealth says:

Use as much as you are comfortable with. It is not really a scientifically researched recipe to produce specific or guaranteed results, just a refreshing, healthy juice to drink. If you find the recipe a bit sharp add more apple juice.

  38. MotleyHealth says:

For those that mentioned fainting etc, this is not a diet, it is a recipe for a juice drink. If you only have this each day and nothing else you will be starving yourself.

  39. Thank you so much for having such an informative, well-kept, and up to date site. I’ve tried this detox with amazing results. I have less back pain at work, and more eneergy than i would have normally just getting coffee everyday!

I’m considering the lemon detox now just to feel even more 100% rejuvenated, but to those who are considering between the two I’d def try THIS one first, eliminate any soda drinking, (I actually only drink water anyways) and junk/fast food/processed foods, and you’ll get an idea of how GOOD you can feel, naturally.
    <3

  40. MotleyHealth says:

Glad you have improved your diet so well Vikki, well done!

  41. I find the Lemon drink too sweet. would that be the normal thing? or perhaps I have added in too much maple syrup.

  42. MotleyHealth says:

Probably Blessing! Have you tried without adding to the recipe?

  43. Mrs. Lovett says:

I am really thinking about the apple juice diet. Being apples do have vitamins and fiber. How many times a day should I drink this? And how long should I stay on the detox?

  44. MotleyHealth says:

This is not a diet, just a drink that you make and drink in the mornings. If you just drank this you would have a very unbalanced diet with no proteins or fats which would lead to muscle wastage and reduced concentration.

  45. I just wanted to know how much juice does this recipe make? is it like one glass? if it makes more should I drink the whole thing at once? drink one glass before each meal to burn fat?
    Thanks

  46. MotleyHealth says:

Yes, one glass, drink it all, first thing in the morning. If you want to drink it before every meal you can, it is just a juice drink.

  47. im doing the maple diet and i can barley hold the drink down i think it tastes foul.. but i realy want to loose weight fast?

  48. MotleyHealth says:

Hi Emma. The “maple diet” is really just a fast that people have been doing for years / decades. The only reason a Maple syrup drink is consumed is to give some sustenance to the body while fasting. Some strict Christians would use this method during lent in years gone by.

Losing weight fast by starving your body of energy (which is what fasting / maple syrup diet it) may result in some quick weight loss, but it is not sustainable. You really are much, much better off following a healthy and balanced diet and exercising more.

If you reduce calories but make sure you still get some healthy proteins, low GI carbohydrates and drink just water, and exercise every day then you will also lose weight quickly.

It is natural to want to chose an easy option to lose weight, but really intensive exercise and healthy diet is probably easier for most people anyway. Generally people do not enjoy fasting, as you are discovering. The result is that the fast ends and then you gain weight very quickly again.

Think long term. Get fit and lose weight with a healthy diet.

  49. Am I supposed to put it all in a blender and blend it to a juice consistency?

  50. MotleyHealth says:

Yes, just blend / juice it then drink it.
