The “Maple Syrup diet” that Beyonce went on before making Dreamgirls is a fast. The process is hard on the body. When Beyoncé Knowles had to lose weight quickly for her role in the film Dreamgirls she turned to the Maple Syrup Diet (also known as the Lemonade Diet). This diet is a form of fasting that helps you to start losing fat.

Beyoncé Stops Fad Diets

In April 2012 Beyoncé announced that she was going to stop all fad diets to ensure that she is a good example to her daughter, who was born in January. She was recently seen enjoying the good weather in a black swimsuit and this sparked some new interest into how she stays in shape.


While she admits that she is not a fitness fanatic, she does enjoy doing a healthy amount of exercise to stay in shape. Her work is very active which helps her to burn more energy.

Beyoncé says that most important part of staying on great shape is to simple eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise.

Beyonce’s Fitness Workouts

Before we look at the diet it is important to point out that Beyoncé does not use this fast to keep in shape. Like all fit and healthy celebrities Beyoncé goes to the gym on a regular basis to workout. Her figure is now the result of her healthy eating and fitness routines.

The diet she went on was only for a very short period before Dreamgirls was filmed in 2006. So if you want a slim and toned body like Beyoncé, do not try this fast/cleanse. If you asked Beyonce how to lose weight she would not reply “Master Cleanse“, she would tell you it is by eating a healthy diet and exercising a lot.

Beyonce’s Gym Workout

Beyonce does full body workouts at the gym, using weights to exercise her shoulders and biceps, bodyweight training, such as push ups, sit ups, squats and lunges to work her legs, core and chest. This beginners weight training routine will get you started on a similar workout.

She also runs up to 6 miles several times a week and does boxing workouts which provide an intensive cardio workout and endurance training, which help her to performing dance routines on stage.

Beyoncé’s Lemon Juice with Maple Syrup Diet


Beyoncé’s Maple Syrup Diet is really an unhealthy way to lose weight. It simply involves eating no solid food at all. The flush and laxative treatments add to the health risks associated with this method. This makes it an unhealthy and unsustainable method for weight management. Really it is just a crash diet.

Instead of eating solid food, a mixture of lemon juice, Grade B Medium (grade 2 in the UK) Maple Syrup, water and Cayenne pepper is drunk. This mix can be taken cold, as a cordial, or hot as a tea. The mix contains some essential vitamins and minerals.

As solid food is not eaten it is necessary to help the digestive system eliminate material and avoid constipation. This is achieved in two ways: laxative tea is taken every night, and 32 ounces of lukewarm sea salt water serves as a top-down enema in the morning. This passes through the digestive system extremely quickly—30-60 minutes.

How Long Should the Maple Syrup Diet Last For?

The guidelines for the Master Cleanse recommends that it is done for a minimum of ten days, although it is not uncommon for people to stay on the cleanse for longer periods of time. Fasting for such long periods requires careful breaking, as intestinal cultures need to re-develop and mucus linings need to be re-built. This usually involves drinking “full strength” juices for a day or two, while slowly re-introducing soups, then fruit, vegetables and nuts before resuming a regular diet.

This fast break is an ideal time to add probiotics to re-establish a healthy intestinal culture. Bear in mind that this is not the only way to lose weight fast.

Whether you decide to do this fast or not, you should ensure that you follow a healthy diet after.

Maple Syrup Diet Recipe:

  • 2 tablespoons (1 fluid ounce) freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)
  • 2 tablespoons (1 fluid ounce) organic Grade B (UK grade 2 ) maple syrup
  • 1/10 Teaspoon or more cayenne pepper – as much as you can comfortable cope with
  • 1 Cup (8 fluid ounces) purified or spring water

To Make a Bottle of the Maple Syrup / Lemon Cleanse Drink for the Day:

  • 5 Squeezed Lemons
  • 1 1/4 cup of organic Grade B maple syrup (if you can get it)
  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 10 cups of water

Add all the ingredients to a bottle and shake. Shake again before each drink to avoid any segments settling at the bottom.


If you want a simpler detox solution, then just make an Apple, Lemon and Lime Detox Juice every morning.

The Salt Water Flush

The idea of the salt water flush is to remove waste from the colon. The argument for doing it is that fecal matter can remain in the bowels for a long time and this “flush” forces it out. It is not a very pleasant procedure so many people chose not to do the flush.

However, there is no medical or scientific basis on doing it for health or weight loss. It may also cause an imbalance in healthy bacteria and harm your digestive system.

Eating a high fiber diet will clean out your digestive system more effectively than drinking salt water and it is healthy too.

How To Do it

It is recommended that you use sea salt for the flush. Start with 2 teaspoons with 1 liter of room temperature water and drink the solution. If you do not respond to this amount then you will need to use more salt.

Expect 3 to 8 bowel movements in the following hours which will expel the liter of salt solution – this will be a strong watery diarrhea. This is the flush. It will not be pleasant and it is vital that you only take the solution when you do not need to leave the house for at least half a day.

When Is The Best Time for the Salt Water Flush?

It is best done first thing in the morning on a day when you can stay at home and close to the toilet for the day. Many people prefer to do this in the evening so that they have the whole night to recover. Expect bowel movements every 15 minutes or so until all the solution has passed through. If you do not like the sound of the salt water flush then find a local (and registered) doctor that performs colonic irrigation.

It is up to you how many times you do the salt water flush. MotleyHealth recommends that you do not do it at all and instead eat a higher fiber diet with plenty of raw salad vegetables to help clean your digestive system in a healthy and sustainable way.

In 2013 Alex Brooker tried this fast and did the salt water flush. He pointed out that Beyonce never talked about how unpleasant this was, and you could tell that he was having a really bad time with it.

What Happens During the Maple Syrup Diet

Beyoncé’s Maple Syrup Diet is said by Stanley Burroughs and later authors to eliminate toxins and congestion that have built up in the body. Because it is not a complete source of macro-nutrients, it should be considered as another form of fasting, rather than a diet. There is also no scientific or medical evidence that we are aware of to support this idea of toxin removal.

Supporters of the Maple Syrup Diet have credited it with helping them lose weight and reduce stomach fat, increase energy level, and even alleviate some chronic diseases. However, many people who are overweight feel sluggish and bloated due to an unhealthy diet and just stopping all junk food can make you feel more energetic.

How Much Weight Did Beyonce Lose on the Maple Syrup Diet?

Some in the entertainment industry have misunderstood fasting as a weight loss diet. The Maple Syrup Diet received media attention as a result of being embraced by some celebrities. The singer/actress Beyoncé did it for 14 days and lost 22 lb (9 kg) for her role in the 2006 movie Dreamgirls.

Howard Stern’s co host Robin Quivers claims to have lost 73 lb using the Master Cleanse. Similarly, Jared Leto says he lost the weight he gained to play ‘Mark David Chapman’ (he gained 62 lb) all from the Maple Syrup Diet.

The Different Juice Fasting Stages of Detoxification

Stage 1 (Day 1 To Day 2) On the first day of fasting, the blood sugar level drops below 70 mg/dl. To restore the blood to the normal glucose level, liver glycogen is converted to glucose and released into the blood. This reserve is enough for half a day, the body then reduces the basal metabolic rate (BMR). The rate of internal chemical activity in resting tissue is lowered to conserve energy. The heart slows down and blood pressure is reduced. Glycogen is pulled from the muscle causing some weakness. The first wave of cleansing is usually the worst.

Headaches, dizziness, nausea, bad breath, glazed eyes and a heavily coated tongue are signs of the first stage of cleansing. Hunger can be the most intense in this period unless the enema is used, which quickly assists the body into the fasting state by ending digestion in the colon.

Stage 2 (Day 3 To Day 7) Fats, composed of transformed fatty acids, are broken down to release glycerol from the glyceride molecules and are converted to glucose. The skin may become oily as rancid oils are purged from the body. People with problem free skin may have a few days of pimples or even a boil. A pallid complexion is also a sign of waste in the blood. Ketones are formed by the incomplete oxidation of fats. It is suspected that the ketones in the blood suppress the appetite by affecting the food-satiety centre in the hypothalamus. You may feel hungry for the first few days of the fast. This is a temporary effect, as the desire to eat will disappear. Lack of hunger may last 40 to 60 days, depending on whether you are on water or juice.

As the body embraces the fast, the digestive system is able to take a much needed rest, focusing all of its energies on cleansing and healing. The white blood cells and the immune system activity increases. You may also feel pain in your lungs, as the cleansing organs and the lungs are in the process of being repaired. Periodically, the lymphatic system expels mucous matter through the nose or throat. The volume excreted of this yellow-colored mucus can be shocking. The sinuses go through periods of being clogged, then will totally clear. The breath is still foul and the tongue coated. Within the intestine, the colon is being repaired and impacted faeces on the intestinal wall start to loosen.

Stage 3 (Day 8 to Day 15) On the latter part of an extended fast, you can experience enhanced energy, clear-mindedness and feel better than you have felt since childhood. On the downside, old injuries may become irritated and painful. This is a result of the body’s increased ability to heal during fasting. If you had broken your arm 10 years before, there is scar tissue around the break. At the time of the break, the body’s ability to heal was directly related to lifestyle. If you lived on a junk-food diet, the body’s natural healing ability was compromised.

During fasting, the body’s healing process is at optimum efficiency. As the body scours for dead or damaged tissue, the lymphocytes enter the older and damaged tissue, secreting substances to dissolve the damaged cells. These substances irritate the nerves in the surrounding region and cause a recurrence of aches from previously injured areas that may have disappeared years earlier. The pain is good, as the body is completing the healing process. The muscles may become tight and sore due to toxin irritation. The legs can be the worst affected, as toxins accumulate in the legs. Cankers are common in this stage due to excessive bacteria in the mouth. Daily gargling with salt and water will prevent or heal cankers.

Stage 4 (Day 16 to Day 30) The body is completely adapted to the fasting process. There is more energy and clarity of mind. Cleansing periods can be short, with many days of feeling good in between. There are days when the tongue is pink and the breath is fresh. The healing work of the organs is being completed. After the detoxification mechanisms have removed the causative agent or render it harmless, the body works at maximum capacity in tissue proliferation to replace damaged tissue. While a short fast will reduce the symptoms caused by toxification, a longer fast can completely heal. Homoeostatic balance is at optimum levels. The lymphatic system is clean, except for a rare discharge of mucus through the nose or throat. After day 20, the mind is affected. Heightened clarity and emotional balance are felt at this time. Memory and concentration improve.

Stage 5 (Breaking the Fast) The sticky, toxic, mucous coating on the intestinal wall is loose, and the first meal frees it from the intestinal wall. Toxins enter the blood through the colon. The gallbladder dumps its waste in a heavy discharge of bile. This can cause an instant bowel movement upon eating followed by intense diarrhoea. If the symptoms are too uncomfortable, an enema will help.

The Master Cleanse?

It is not clear if the fast that Beyonce followed was the Master Cleanse or another fast that is similar. Although the Master Cleanse Fast was the first to popularize the lemon juice with sugar / syrup solution for fasting, this method has actually been around for many years. We first heard of the Master Cleanse during the 1950′s when Stanley Burroughs wrote Master Cleanser (published by Burroughs Books, ISBN-13: 978-0963926203)

However, there are records of people drinking lemon and sugar drinks during Lent and other periods of fasting as a way to cope with the lack of food.

Health Warnings

Some critics point to lack of essential nutrients in Beyoncé’s Maple Syrup Diet, citing a deficiency of protein, vitamins, and minerals. As a result of these deficiencies, individuals on the diet may experience dizziness, delirium, and fainting in the short term, with possible damage to the body occurring in longer-term applications. Many authors assert that the benefits of fasting are related to its lack of nutrients, particularly macronutrients. People with intestinal conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome may experience added discomfort while on the cleanse.

There is a risk that the saltwater flush may remove both beneficial and harmful bacteria from the body. A no-food diet may cause the gut to stop passing food, resulting in constipation, or may make the consumption of food immediately after the fast painful. These are the important reasons to follow the fast’s instructions correctly.

Beyoncé Knowles said of her decision to adopt the Maple Syrup diet: “My nutritionist suggested the only way to do that was the maple syrup fast. As soon as it was over, I gained the weight back.” She experience very rapid weight loss while on this fasting diet.

“I’m very conscious of being a curvy woman and I’m very happy that I am a curvy woman. I would never recommend it to anyone unless you are doing a movie and it’s necessary, and you have proper help.”

Remember that people like Beyonce Knowles have a great incentive to lose weight fast, as this ensures that they win contracts to appear in films, commercials and television. These diets are not healthy, so it is recommended that a longer term approach to weight loss is taken. Crash diets can be a useful way to kick-start yourself into a healthy lifestyle, as quick results can give you the boost of confidence that is often needed. However, they should not be considered long term solutions to weight problems. We recommend a good balance of healthy diet and regular exercise. Also, remember to consult your family doctor before embarking on a period fasting or extreme dieting.

If you revert to your old ways after this fast, you will gain nothing, and maybe actually put on more weight. Yoyo dieting is not good for your health, and cannot be sustained long term. So, eat healthily and exercise hard.

6. Is this the best way to lose weight fast?
No. Fasting is the worse way to lose weight. To lose weight and maintain that weight loss you have to learn to live a healthy lifestyle, and you can only learn how to do this by actively changing the way you eat and the way you exercise. If you do not learn how to do this for yourself, then you will be set up to be a yo-yo dieter. As soon as the fast finishes you will regain the weight again.
7. Can I still exercise?
Yes, if you have the energy to do so, you can exercise. Be careful though, do not embark on a new fitness regime, and do not do any heavy lifting.
8. Do I have to have the ceyenne pepper?
No, of course not. You do not have to have anything that you do not want. Cayenne pepper has a minor effect on metabolism.

    In theory you can use any form of syrup as the purpose of the diet is really to create a starvation effect. However, artificial maple syrup is made with an extremely large amount of dissolved sugar. The solution is heated so more sugar can be put in than normally possible. So artificial maple is not as healthy as natural syrup.

    Just mix it with water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper and drink at meal times. Remember to take an A-Z vitamin and mineral supplement.

    Personally I would suggest adopting a low-carb diet rather than a maple syrup one for anyone looking to lose weight quickly.

    That is correct Anita. The diet is extreme. It is not healthy, and it is not a long term solution to being overweight. It only works because it restricts calories so drastically. You have to adopt a good healthy diet in the long term to maintain a healthy weight.

    A better solution if you do not have a strict Hollywood deadline to lose weight would be to take things slower, eat a well balanced diet and exercise more. I personally used Atkins to lose weight, and it worked for me, although studies show that over a one year period it does not fare much better than calorie controlled diets.

    Always take care in whatever diet you chose to adopt.

    Cayenne pepper is thought to aid weight loss, as it can help to increase metabolism and aid digestion. It has been used in herbal medicine for many years to improve circulation also.

    If you really dislike it, then simply do not use it – but you may be missing out on some of the benefits of the maple syrup diet if you do so.

    I have not been able to find any hard evidence that it improve metabolism, however according to it is one of a few things you can use to speed up your metabolism; specifically, it “contains an ingredient called capsaicin that stimulates saliva, stimulates digestion and accelerates your metabolism at a safer level.”

    However, green tea has also been shown to improve metabolism in similar ways, so maybe drink a few cups of green tea everyday too instead.

    Zoey, lemon and honey are for flavour and vitamins really. You should be able to buy cayenne in most large supermarkets or oriental stores. Take care with this diet, fast weight loss is not healthy weight loss.

    Mel, you should be ok with any of those exercises. Avoid heavy weight lifting. You may find that you lack enough energy to perform a full workout, and recovery will take longer.

    Colleen, you can drink as much as you like, within reason. So long as you do not eat, then you are sticking to the rules. Please remember that this is not a healthy method of weight loss though. It is designed to be very short term, and Beyoncé actually dissuades people from trying it.

    Aly, really it is up to you. The pepper is to help boost metabolism, which will burn more fat. But too much pepper may upset your stomach, so go easy. You could also try Tabasco sauce, and count the number of drops you put in, and adjust the next drink accordingly. Really it is down to personal preference.

    Ebony, use what you can get. I you only have access to grade A, then that will be OK. Really the key is that you are reducing your calorific intake dramatically during this time. The different grades of maple syrup are mostly due to seasonal variations.

    I can’t find an organic Grade B Maple syrup here in my place (I live at Manila, Philippines) so instead I’ll use honey from Palawan, it’s not sterilized or filtered thus still having bee pollens which makes it healthier so what do you think?

    Aly, you can use honey, but then it will not be a maple syrup diet, but a sweet honey diet!

    As for protein, yes, protein is essential if you are working out. But this is a fasting diet. It is not healthy long term. It is to get quick results (i.e. weight loss). Once the weight is lost, you need to maintain a healthy well balanced diet and exercise more. This is the time to start eating more protein.

    How fast will weight come back after it’s been lost? I’m getting ready for an event, but it would be nice to lose the weight and not gain it back as soon as I end the fast. Is there a way to slow the weight gain? Would a slow reintroduction of foods (juice, broths, soups, and eventually solid foods) help prevent immediate weight gain?

    With any fasting diet you have to expect to lose some muscle tissue. The purpose of this diet is to lose weight quickly. Remember – it is NOT a healthy diet. Certainly not long term. Use it if you need to get your weight down quickly, but ensure after that you eat a healthy balanced diet, and get plenty of proteins to maintain and build muscle. If losing muscle is out of the question, then it is probably wise not to do this fast. Remember, Beyoncé said “I would never recommend it to anyone” and she gained the weight afterwards pretty quickly too. If sports are your thing, then you should concentrate on exercise to compliment those.

    Some would say that a fast is the best way to detox. However, just eating healthy fruits and vegetables (mostly raw) and drinking nothing but water is also an effective way to detox. Our bodies are very efficient at detoxing without going to any extremes.

    Hawaii808, the fast lasts for 30 days. You probably will not want to dive straight back in to your previous diet until your body has recovered from the fast. Take it easy, get over the possible intense diarrhoea that may follow. Also, you probably do not actually want to get back to your regular eating and workouts, you need to do something different to ensure that you do not pile on the extra weight in the first place.

    Most shakes contain many calories, either in the form of carbs of fat, so you will not be doing “this” diet if you drink shakes. You may be better off following a SlimFast type of diet which still restricts calories but is not actually a fast.

    Y, strictly speaking, no. But if you do, you are still having a severely restrictive diet. It may not officially be a “fast”, but you will lose weight. Seeing that grapefruit actually boosts metabolism, this is actually a very good choice of fruit to add to the diet.

    Cayenne does have some properties that helps to boost metabolism. However, so does chilli pepper. Common black ground pepper may not be so effective. As for the honey, I do not see why not. It is still sugar based, and gives some energy.

    I have found that lemon is a natural appetite suppressant and grade B organic syrup contains minerals, amino acids, balanced sugars, and vitamins you need during a fasting diet. I would suggest to follow the recipe as is. Also cayenne does come in capsules, you are supposed to take 1 capsule 4 times during the day.

    No, nothing really wrong with that. Remember that this is an extreme fast, that is not really healthy at all. You are actually always better off with a restrictive calorie diet and exercise, rather than a complete fast.

    Hi, I am also starting this diet. today is my first day. I did it once sometime last year and it worked. I lost like 15 pounds in 10 days.
    I am planning to travel sometime next week which is why I have returned to this diet.
    I used Maple B the first time and now I am using Maple A. Maple B is definetly the best for substain energy. Maple A is also good if you cannot get your hands on Maple B. I have added B-12 drops in my drink until I am able to get the Maple B.
    Today I have a headache, and I felt tired earlier at work. I am hoping it will get better soon. I have a feeling once I get the B, the headache will subside and my energy will return so I am able to work out.

    If you are doing this diet for a long period of time, it is essential that you do some exercise to keep your skin firm.

    Clopez, S, A***P, you should still lose weight. As mentioned before, it wil not strictly be a fasting “diet” but you will still be restricting your calories, so you will lose weight. It is actually healthier to do it this way.

    Sara, yes, take a multi vitamin. If you do for less than 30 days you will still lose weight for sure.

    Well, the main thing NOT to do to gain the weight back after, is to return to your old eating habits. Everyone puts on weight for the same reason – they eat too much. Some have medical conditions which mean that they are more likely to put on weight, however the ultimate reason remains the same – over eating. So, once you have lost the weight, to keep it off, you need to find your ideal diet. The best way to do this is to introduce food slowly, keep portions small and meals frequent. Keep a log of everything you eat, and monitor your weight. As soon as your weight increases, you know that you have gone too far, so cut back on portions. Also, get more exercise. This is vital. One of the good things about the Atkins diet is that the final stage aids people maintaining a healthy weight (although few dieters actually stick with the plan after induction).

    Dezzy, this is a fasting diet, which means you do not add soup etc. However, it is not a healthy diet. If you are breastfeeding then definitely do not go on this fast/cleanse. Instead eat healthy and exercise lots. As with any diet, you can drink water with it.

    Hey Motley,
    I have been on this diet for 6 days now. I do not have the same results as I did last time I did this diet with Maple B. The last time I had plenty of energy (so much I did not even need vitamins) and I lost weight at a quicker rate. I am feeling so tired and exausted some days that I try adding B-12 drops to the drink.
    I also have feel to cheat more than the last time I did it. this morning I had a cup of cocoa with soy milk. I have lost about 5 pounds now. last time I did this diet with Maple B, I lost an average of 2-2 1/2 pounds a day.
    Do you think it is because Maple A has more refined sugar contained in it?

    Unlikely to be the sugar content alone, although it is bound to have some effect. If last time you had more energy, maybe your metabolism was working differently. However, losing 2.5 pounds a day is still an achievement, even if a lot of that is water at the moment. The cup of cocoa means that your broke the fast, however, as I mentioned before, it is still a very restrictive diet in terms of calories. Keep taking those supplements, although you had more energy last time you should have still taken some to ensure that your body did not go without.

    I don’t think people understand. This is not a diet. It’s a fast intended to help the body recover, and strengthen your ability to fight disease. Improved concentration, increased energy, improved skin and hair has also been a result of the detox. Honey cannot replace the quality of the maple syrup and hence should not be used. Also if you dislike the taste of cayenne pepper ginger can be used instead.

    Please remember, in today’s society many are judged on appearance and so if we classify this detox as a diet, people will turn to it as a rapid weight loss method. Many people become engrossed in weight loss and soon it loses its purpose, to make you healthier and maybe become more active.

    If you are not active and are involved in this detox, I suggest you take up some sporting activity, walking, running, cycling, during the end of the detox as you will have increased levels of energy and this will help you prevent putting back on those pounds when you return to a solid food diet. I also suggest that you do not take this detox for more than 14 days. If you do, consult a doctor. Treat you body with respect, and you will have many years to come.

    HI!..This is is my 1st day to do the detox…so far so good…the first intake of the mixture, I really felt weird, bcoz my stomach was crunching then I felt my whole body a bit shaky,but the best part is I was sweating like a pig,arms, legs…I was dripping.. so I guess I burned tons of calories there, I used 2tbsp for all the ingredients, but I’ve realized 2tbsp of cayenne pepper is risky bcoz it’ll harm the intestines….for the people who lives in Manila, you can get grade B maple syrup in any Healthy Options stores for Php754.00…
    I really can’t wait for the result after 2 weeks=)

    Well day 1 is done :) All going well! got hunger pangs today but slugged down a bit mug of lemony maply, peppery water. I had a headache last night but its to be expected at first i guess.

    This program is based upon book by Stanley Borroughs’ THE MASTER CLEANSER. Read the book (50 pages, $7) It is a cleanse not a diet or a fast. Grade B Maple Syrup has a higher vitamin and mineral content that other syrup. Lemons are acidic. However they are alkali producing in the body. I use organic lemons, organic grade b maple syrup, organic cayenne, and organic teas. I think the book suggest 8-10 glasses a day, enough for the body to get plenty of calories from the maple syrup. If you are tired you are doing something wrong. Finally, you may want to check out MASTER CLEANSE SECRETS for some help and adjustments.

    I am on the diet/detox at the minute and it’s day 8 today, i’m doing the diet for 10 days. The first 2 days are the hardest because the body is adjusting but i prepared myself by eating only fruit 3 days before i started the diet so my body was used to eating very little leading up to it. I have done it for detox reasons as i stopped drinking/smoking last month and wanted to completely rid my body of all toxins. Honestly it has been great, after the first 2 days I haven’t felt hungry instead i have felt alert energetic and basically have been able to go to work everyday and carry on as normal. The trick is to make up a days worth of “lemon drink” in a bottle and carry it around with you or have it to hand at work, when you get any hunger pangs just drink the drink, hunger will soon pass.     Oh yeah just to add there is alot of talk about using different ingredients, after months of researching prior to going on the detox this is how to make the drink, any adaptions just wont work and all the effort will be for nothing..i have Stanley Borroughs book and have read it word for word…

    Fill a glass with 4 oz water

    Add 2 tablespoons madal bal syrup or medium grade maple syrup

    Add half a lemon (must be juice squeezed from fresh lemons)

    I put in a pinch of cayenne pepper but you can put in as much or as little as you want (depending on your taste) alternatively you can use ginger

    Mix and add another 4 oz of water

    I have been drinking 6-8 glassess, this is the recommended amount …

    Hi Megan,

    In 19 days you can make some good progress with exercise and good diet alone. As you have exams I suggest that you avoid this fast/detox method of weight loss. You need to be in excellent shape mentally to perform well in your exams. My suggestion is to wake up early, do 30 minutes of cardio exercise (running, circuit training, dance etc.) then eat a healthy breakfast (fruits, oats, milk, yogurts). Study hard, then eat a healthy lunch (tuna salad would be ideal). Drink plenty of water throughout the day (dehydration also impairs concentration) and then in the evening before dinner do another workout, with some weight bearing exercises (or just bodyweight, such as circuit training again). Study more, then get an early night.

    The exercise should help you concentrate and sleep well. The healthy food will keep your body and mind in good health. The water will prevent dehydration and aid concentration. And you should lose some weight and tone up the muscles without fear of wasting away while fasting for 19 days! You skin should look more vibrant too. Good luck with the schedule, and good luck with the exams.

    Well im on day 8 and all is going well. I feel fantastic, more energy and concerntration which i certainly didnt expect!! Also, got on the scales last night and fould i’d lost 11lb in 7 days!!! I think a lot of it is water as i had quite a high salt diet before! I cant believe the diffrence this detox is making to me all over! I shall do another week and then have a break from it!     Hi Motley, I guess I did give up but only because I under estimated the toll it takes having a newborn, I lost a little but I am determined to do it again and go the distance.

    I am on day 30 now. It is an exercise in freedom. Mind, body, and spirit. I have read the book by called ” The Master Cleanse” and it suggests to go for 40 days.

    I really haven’t lost that much weight, but I have found calmness and peace again.

    I followed the diet, cleanse very closely, no cheating, in anyway.

    I hate to give it up just yet.

    Anyone out there have thoughts on 40 days,
    have you done it?

    i have a question… im taking this detoxification for almost 5 days… i just want to know if i can eat a meal at lunch time only and still drink this on breakfast and dinner time… can i still loose weight on this kind of a habit???

    Well, yes and no. If you have a meal at lunchtime, then it is likely that you will still lose weight, however it will mean that you will not be fasting / cleansing. However, we believe that you should do what works for you always, and if you want to enjoy lunch with friends while using the principals of the Maple Syrup Diet to restrict total calories, then go for it!

    In response to Nene, you shouldn’t eat ANYTHING while you’re cleansing.. lemonade drink only.. I know some folks on this board asked if you can use regular maple syrup instead of Grade B.. You really shouldn’t. It’s not recommended by the founder of the diet. I actually buy a Master Cleanser Kit whenever I do the lemonade diet, it makes it really simple for me to start because I get everything I need at once.

    I have drank the sea salt water for two days now and it does nothing. Can I just take laxatives that come in pill form? Also, how badly does drinking alcohol defer this diet? I’m on day 3 and have been following the diet and have not seen any loss in weight so far. But could this be due to the salt water not working for me?

    Neen, there really are no quick solutions. Staving yourself reduces muscle tone, and even the most slender models should have some muscle tone. Just do lots of running and circuit training, with Pilates and yoga exercises thrown in. Cut out all sugar and bread/cakes/biscuits.

    Impossible to say. Depends on how much weight you have to lose, and how restrictive you are. Just remember, this IS NOT a healthy “diet”. It is a fast (some call it a cleanse, as fast is deemed a negative term). It will result in loss of fat and muscle tissue, and can pose risk to health.

    I’m on day 8 and I’ve already dropped down a size. I do have bouts of hunger and have given in and eaten twice but I did not binge. I ate something very healthy, tomatoe soup or a piece of fish baked. I haven’t drank any of the laxative tea or salt water. I am also NOT working out while I do this because I tend to get really hungry after working out. I’m very please with my progress and everyone has commented on my weight loss.

    Thanks, Motley. I forgot to add that I’m also taking vitamins: E, Super B, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, fish oil, 7KEto DHEA, DIM, Calcium D-Glucarate and a fat burner. I have tons of enery and I’m more focused. I decided to drink the sea salt water on Saturday, that way I’m in the privacy of my home LOL. Remember that you can use other types of syrup though. It is really the fast that is most important, so do not get too worried if you cannot find the right type of Maple Syrup.

    I think that it would. It would not strictly be a fast / cleanse, but you will still be restricting your calories, and this is probably healthier in the long run. Try eating low GI foods that are high in fibre.

    This diet will work but don’t expect weight loss of 3 or 4 kilos in 2 days… it wont happen for all people

    Hi I’m planning on starting this diet and you’ve previously said that it’s easier to fill a large bottle and carry it around for the day… I was wondering if the ingredients have to be equal to the water.     Hi, I started the fast on tuesday and today is day 5 and I have not had any hunger pangs, headache or any dizziness, instead I became energetic…
    However, I could not find the maple syrup, but a maple flavoured syrup made out of brown sugar. Will that be a problem???

    Is it also a problem if I drink the MS mixture in the morning and evening and for lunch have meals like chicken salad with no dressing or cheese?

    NA, in all honesty, you are better off in the long term eating your chicken salads. You will still be having a calorie restrictive diet, so this will be good. Remember that the purpose of the Maple Syrup Diet is really to cleanse the body, it is essentially a fast. This is not actually a healthy way to lose weight. What you are doing, although compromising the fast, is better for your health, and a more sustainable method of weight loss.

    Hi Yamilette. I really cannot answer that question. To be honest, losing 11 pounds a week is not healthy. Also, it really depends on how overweight you are now. This is really a clease / fast, so you will be getting very few calories. Also, you will be losing water, and muscle tissue, as well as fat. As for working out, people struggle to do any real exercise while fasting due to a lack of energy. And if you are not used to exercising, then this makes it harder.

    Really I would advise you to look at your current diet, and make it healthy. Follow the advice on our “how to lose belly fat” article (it actually covers all body fat!) and start exercising, maybe just walking everyday to start with, then build up to bodyweight circuit training exercises. Get a DVD to help you workout at home. Go for a long walk (1 hour) or start jogging.

    If you just do this fast to lose 22 pounds, it is very likely that you will put all the weight back on very quickly when you end it. Change you life for the better, not just 2 weeks.

    It probably contain a lot of calories (I am guessing) so not ideal on a fast, but probably a more sensible option to approach this as a restrictive diet rather than a true fast.

Ive got my kitchen lookin like a “mayple syrup fasting lab” lol… i’ve prepared 10 cups of spring water , 1 cup of squeezed lemon juice ( which was actually 6 lemons) 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and 1 1/4 cup organic grade B maple syrup … I mixed all ingredients together except for the lemon juice and poured into 5 16 fl oz bottles ( which will give me my days worth)…. i read somewhere not to pour my lemon juice (4 tablespoons per my 16 oz bottles) until before i am about to drink it…. Im just wanting to make sure it wont cause it to be less effective if i prepare about 3-4 days worth at a time….this is a really expensive fast and dont wana waste any of it…thanks!!!

    It just means that your stomach is not used to the acid in the lemon and the pepper. Do not over do it. Remember, this is not really a very healthy way to try to lose weight.

    If you are not eating then you will lose weight (assuming that you are currently overweight). How to know? Weigh yourself every day at the same time (ideally morning after going to the toilet bet before having your first drink). But please remember, you will lose water and lean muscle tissue as well as fat. And the fat comes back easier than the muscle. Take care, and if in any doubt about how you feel, stop.

    No, the chances are that in a few days you will not have the energy to exercise. You lose weight because you lose muscle tissue and fat. It is really a fast, although marketed as a cleanse. Not healthy, not suitable for all. You really are best off exercising well and eating a healthy diet.

    Hi there,
    Some one asked the question earlier on the page what the effect of alcohol would have regards this fast/cleanse. I wondered what they were. Obviously, this diet is meant for getting toxins out of your body as opposed to mearly loosing weight but if you were to drink alcohol alongside would you recommend not taking sugary drinks as white wine or cabohydrate drinks such as beer? Is vodka lime and soda a good option? Also is there a danger of damage to your stomach or liver drinking with no solid food lining?
    In an ideal case steering clear of alcohol should be the only option but I wanted to know the options.

    Hogarth, if you are doing it for the cleansing benefits then it is best to not drink. If you are trying to lose weight, then alcohol will slow that down too (alcohol is a form of energy). It really depends on what you are aiming to do. If you want to lose weight, not lose lean muscle tissue, and be healthy, do not do this Maple Syrup fast/cleanse/diet. Cut back on the carbs, eat lean proteins and exercise hard.

    If I was invited to a dinner that was important, I would go and enjoy it and continue to diet the following day. You only live once. So long as you don’t have lunches like this everyday. Obviously avoid sugar in all its forms – breads, pasta etc. but don’t let your diet spoil a good time.

    Hi Kitt, the salt water flush is to forcefully expel fecal matter from your lower bowels. Its a top down enema. It is not pleasant, and if your reason for doing the maple syrup diet is just to lose weight quickly then it is not required, as it is part of the cleanse, not the fast. As a substitute you could have a normal enema.

    Kitt, that is fine. You will still be on a very calorie restricted diet which means you will lose some weight. Long term you really need to be prepared to change your eating habits and do regular exercise though.

    Kitt, it is impossible to say really. 3 days is not long, certainly not long enough to make any major changes to your body. Remember that your genetics determine where the fat is lost first, and how much fat is lost. One problem of a fasting diet such as this is that you will also lose lean muscle tissue. Are you an active person generally? Do you do any exercise? How much belly fat do you have? All of these will impact on how you progress. Really you should start thinking long term as soon as possible and incorporate regular exercise and healthy eating (both type of food and portion size) into your daily routine. This is the only way to stay in shape in the long run.

    Hi Kitt. Just to clarify, are you following the diet exactly or eating carrots and celery? If the latter, how much? Weight loss does take time.     I just started this but i changed most of the ingredients. I used Lime,ginger and honey. Also I just gave birth recently and since i have a new born I cant cut solids completely.Im a single mom I need Energy. But im not eating much.In the morning i eat honey bunches of oats with reduced fat lactaid milk and i also eat some fruits like strawberries and bananas.I dont like drinking laxatives so instead i drink green tea and prune juice. In the evening I’ll have a small portion of tuna with celery,red & green peppers and unions. Is this ok? will i still be detoxing this way? Im on day 3 and i have already lost 3 pounds! So it must be working some how.

    Hi Kitt, it is unfortunately impossible to say. Everyone is different. If the diet does not work for you, then you should try an alternative approach, such as a healthy but low calorie diet and a combination of intensive cardio training and weight lifting.

    Hi Kitt. Are you weighing yourself at the same time everyday, ideally first thing in the morning after going to the loo and before drinking anything? Think seriously about what I said before – if it is not working for you, do something different. Don’t torture yourself because this is not working for you. Find something that will. If you have the will and motivation to do a fast / cleanse then you should easily be able to find the mental energy to start a serious fitness regime. In the long term this will make you fitter, healthier and much happier. Maybe it is best to stop the fast and get fit instead?

    I would like to find out whether the mixture replaces the water which we are supposed to drink per day of 2 litres. Can you advise when exactly the syrup mixture should be taken? Are there specified times eg like meal times? Can one take other forms of liquid like juices or is one only restricted to the syrup? To avoid constipation can you recommend which laxative or tea can be taken? Is the laxative necessary? Sorry for so many questions but I’m desperate to shed a few kilo’s.     Hi Zama. Most people make up a bottle of the lemon/maple drink in the morning and drink throughout the day. Drink when you need it, i.e. hungry. meal times, in between meal times. What are meal times anyway? As for laxative, the salt water flush will sort that out, but if you do not want to do that (who can blame you?) then speak to your local pharmacist regarding laxative options.

    I would like to know whether excercise, particalary walking on a treadmill is recommended during the 10 day detox? I am on my second day today, and funny enough I haven’t been hungry at all. Yesterday I did feel slight headaches and today I feel okay, no headaches yet. Do you think walking will just speed up the weightloss, yet it is not as severe as going to the gym for a full body workout. I will keep you posted on my progress.

    Hi Sarina, not sure if cayenne is what you call red pepper, we call it cayenne. You can use honey instead, but then it will not be a maple syrup diet! As for salt, rock salt will do the trick too.

    Hi Katina, organic is not the same as grade B. If you cannot get grade B just do it with whatever you can find. Some have more sugar than grade B.

    The salt water flush is drunk in one go. It can be in the morning or evening, but you need to stay at home afterwards and until the bowel movements stop.

    Hi Tia, the saltwater flush is the laxative, and you can take it anytime, but it has to be a time when you do not need to leave the house for half a day as you will be having rushed trips to the toilet!

    However, if you are breastfeeding you should not do this fast / diet. You need to be eating more, and also drinking plenty of fluids. The saltwater flush could dry you out a bit. Best to stick to healthy eating and exercise for the moment.

    Hi Diva, I really would suggest that you try some intensive exercise instead. My wife lost all her weight after having our first child by doing Ashtanga yoga. Here she is doing one of her sun salutations. It took about 6 months of Ashtanga to lose all be baby weight, but she was much fitter and healthier for it, and it is a better way to get in shape than detox / flush / fast etc.

    Hi! My finacé and I are looking to start sometime this week. While I have already planned on doing the salt flush at night I was just curious, is there an average time that it lasts? Like do most ppl rush to the washroom every 15 minutes for an hour, two hours, etc? Lol I know everybody is different. I just want to give it time to stop before I have to leave for work- at noon I leave so if I start the salt at 11pm will it be done? Also- is it ok to increase the cayenne pepper?

    Tiff, the salt water flush is a top down enema designed to “cleanse” your bowels. It is not required for the weight loss part. The lemon drink is designed for weight loss – essentially a low calorie drink with some properties to help boost metabolism.

    Trini, yes, the salt water mixture is drunk. Please read the article fully and understand why you are drinking it. It is a top down enema, which means it will result in a violent “flush”, aka diarrhea. Sea salt will work. Alocohol after? Yes, but be careful, your body will be weak and will not be able to handle much alcohol. I would really suggest going on a calorie resitrcive diet, doing some exercise and then enjoy the carnival! Dancing is an excellent way to lose weight.

    It is not an exact science. So long as the volume of juice is about the same you should he OK. I would guess around 1.5 limes to the lemon? Any salt will do, the body will repel it very quickly regardless of the type.

    I’m a doctor, I’ve worked in one of the worlds best nutritional centres at UCH in London, and browsing through your website there is a lot of good advice. However this ‘fast’ is dangerous nonsense. Many of the claims of ‘cleansing’ and ‘healing’ are totally unsubstantiated with no research – to an extent it will do the opposite. Such a fast will undoubtedly result in dramatic weight loss, but a very large proportion will be through gluconeogenesis whereby the body will desperately start breaking down essential proteins from the heart, liver, muscle – basically anywhere it can, to turn it into glucose for fuel. True ketogenesis from fat will occur and fat will be broken down, but the harm done by protein loss is an unacceptable risk. Studies done on such ‘crash’ diets or fasts show that people who follow them almost always put on all the weight and more afterwards. Diets like this risk serious ill health.

    To safely lose weight you need to eat no more than your body needs to sustain itself. Any less and you will starve, or become malnourished.

    I know in the modern world people are desperate for quick fixes to problems that have usually built over months and years, but the sad truth is we haven’t come up with any yet – a safe balanced diet and exercise are the only ways to a healthy body. Anyone telling you something else is just trying to sell you something or doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

    I’m not overweight but a few pounds less will make me look really nice. I have acidic stomach (previously diagnosed) and I’m aware the side effects of lemon and such. However, I’m still keen to give this a try for just 3 days. I will eat raw vegetables when my stomach can’t take the hunger. Wish me luck and pray nothing bad happens. I so badly need this.

    Pillay, please do not do this fast. If you just need to lose a few pounds to look better, you will be much, much better off doing some exercise (bodyweight circuit training, weight trianing) and eating a healthier, calorie controlled diet. This fast will make you look tired and your skin will probably suffer to. Get up and get active instead!

    Unfortunately I’m one of those people who works out much but loses little and it’s frustrating. I’ve tried the soup diet which I enjoyed but I just need something to boost it faster. After reading all the thread, I think taking this concoction in moderation will not cause much damage. Don’t drink it excessively, do it for a very short period, eat raw vegetables (calories counting) in between so that the stomach is not totally empty and you still have some energy to go through the day.

    A while ago I asked a couple questions. They were answered great and my fiancé and I both tried the diet. After 4 days I had shed 8 pounds my fiancé had shed about 10. That was the max we could go. We weren’t aiming entirely to lose weight but neither one if us could even take then “benefits” of the cleanse. If anyone else could let me know of any other diets (to lose weight as well as do something good for the body-we do exercise as well btw) any advise would be appreciated. And for anyone looking to lose weight- I would NOT recommend this. The headaches, random sharp kidney pains that both my fiancé and I got, the dizzy spells- NOT WORTH IT. Not to mention- Motley Health you were right- the weight comes right back!!

    i have questions, can i take centrum (multivitamin) while doing the fast everyday or every other day ? cos i want to stay energetic. and can i still exercise? not too much exercise though, just 45mins or 1hour walking on my treadmill. oh and im not sure if i would find maple syrup here in my country, if i didn’t i would use pure honey instead, i dont think it would make a big difference. im planning to do this for only 10 – 20 days. wish me luck ! hehe and please answer my questions, xoxo :)

    Hi Angelina, your best bet is to just look at your diet. Going “on a diet” is pointless really. You want to make a lifetime change to the way you eat. Take a look at our “lose belly fat” article and other articles in the nutrition section. Improving your exercise will also help. The “weight loss systems that work” links lead to eBooks that you can buy which will teach you all you need to know. But ultimately, you cut out more sugar (in all its forms, in bread and pasta, fructose fruit juices etc.) and eat a diet with a healthier balance, more salads, more lean meat and healthy fats, less stodge, starch and refined/processed ingredients. A fast will never work – we are the way we are due to the lifestyle we live – changing it for a week will not change it forever!

    Hello Hanbah. If you read all our comments then you will see that our recommendation is to not use this method. You say you have “tried everything”. Well, the easiest way for long term success is healthy eating and exercise. This fast is not good for your health, and will result only in a short term weight loss. You will put the weight back on afterwards, because if you are unwilling to make a permanent lifestyle change, you will revert to eating to foods that make you fat.

    I’ve been reading the posts that go up here and of anyone cares to read mine: Don’t bother trying this if you want to lose weight. It worked for myself and my fiancé, which I mentioned in earlier posts, but not without a lot of pain. In the end we lost weight and ultimately harmed ourselves (FYI read my earlier post about the kidney pains). We used to be extremely active and went to the gym 7 days a week. We stopped after an injury n thought this would be a great way to flush out our systems and start back. It ended up being so bad that we had to RECOVER from the cleanse. Please don’t bother trying this if you’re looking to lose weight. Especially if you won’t be making a life style change. We learned the hard way.

    This cleanse has been going well for me. I haven’t felt weak since I started. I have a hard time drinking the salt flush but force myself. My issue is I haven’t lost much weight. I’m on my 12th day and I have only lost 4lbs. My period started 3 days after I started so I thought it was just water weight from my period. It’s 4 days after my period I still haven’t seen much difference unless my scale is broken. I have noticed reduction when I measure myself though. Has anyone experienced this?

    Hi Fab-lady, I think that before you go on this drastic diet you should try to work out what you bowel problem is. For many people such problems are caused by a few problems foods – often very common foods though, like bread, pasta, rice, noodles or sugar. Eating bread, cakes, pastry etc. can all trigger problems. Often it is cumulative too. Start by eliminating food from your diet and see how you get on. Start with refined flour and sugars, i.e. everything mentioned above. That means eat NO bread, pasta, cakes, cookies, soda, sugar, junk food of any type etc. Instead eat proteins, lots of salads (green salads with lettuce, baby spinach, rocket are all very good) and soups (but no croûtons). See how you get on. If that does not work, eliminate dairy, then certain fruits etc, or anything else that you eat a lot of.

    Also keep a food diary – the problems may get worse the day following eating someone, so keep notes of everything you eat. Exclude nothing!

    I used to have the same problem. I had IRB and lazy bowel. I’ve tried cabbage soup and all sorts of fiberous food. For years I was on laxatives to the point my bowels don’t work without laxatives. It was depressing especially during vacations. Then I discovered that the Japaneses have been practising this “ritual” and it worked for them. Upon rising, before brushing your teeth, drink a glass of room-temperature water. You can take your time and sip or you can gulp. Either way, enjoy this 1st glass of liquid. Your 2nd beverage or breakfast should be at least 45mins later. I’ve been doing this for almost a year now and I’ve stayed off the laxatives completely. In the 1st few days you may not see the effect. Some people give up at this point. Keep doing this and it will come naturally. Now my body is so tuned that I will have the desire to ease myself 10mins after a healthy breakfast. The bowels get easier throughout the day, sometimes up to 3 times. They don’t start with the pain you get from laxatives, the feaces are solid but not hard and the color is not dark. I was told that’s healthy feaces. I feel lighter now, my skin has improved tremendously and I’m not bloated anymore. It’s just water so no side effects and if this fails, well, at least you’re hydrated and stimulate your metabolism. Good luck.

    i did the fast/cleanse (not a diet) for 4, 7, 15, 40, 21, and now in the process of a 20-30 day fast (though it will probably be 20 because I don’t want to drop too much weight). when i did the 40 day fast i lost 37 lbs and kept it off for more than a year until my grandmother died, then i started bad eating habits because i was mentally and emotionally tapped from the loss. i started just grabbing food to go and eating out more. if you change your lifestyle after the fast it’s very beneficial. i had an ankle injury and a knee injury that completely healed during the 40 day process to the point that i still don’t fell any pain to this day. i actually feel my recent back injury getting attention because i can feel the nerves tingling and doing something (and my back no longer hurts at this point).

    it does take a tremendous amount of mental committment and will power, especially in the beginning. as i stayed busy, i didn’t think about food at all. the salt water flush is simply horrible, can’t sugar coat that at all. instead of that you can just do the laxative tea in the morning and at night. the benefit for the salt water flush is not waiting all day to see when the tea will work and you don’t have to worry about being in an inconvenient situation when it does work. salt water works within an hour or so. i stuck directly to stanley burrough’s book (which was out way before beyonce started doing this…actually my first fast was 2 years before beyonce was in dreamgirls).
    in short (like i can say that at this point lol) it’s beneficial if you plan to change your lifestyle and it has tremendous benefits with allowing your body to rest from digestive duties to focus on healing.

    Hi Rosy. Do not stress over this “diet”. Firstly, it is not really a diet, more a starvation / fast system. I do not think a lack of Maple syrup will really be that important. Some people use honey instead. It is better though to get more active and eat a healthier diet every day for the rest of your life. This “diet” is not healthy and you will probably put the weight back on as soon as you finish.

    Hi Brian. Yes you will. Firstly, this is not really a “diet”, but a fast. Some call it a cleanse, but that is just marketing from those that “sell it”. You will lose weight if you starve yourself, regardless of whether you exercise or not. But, this is not healthy weight loss. You will regain the weight the moment you revert to your previous lifestyle. You may cause internal damage if you keep doing this fast, or do it for too long. It is unpleasant.

    Slow, steady weight loss while exercising and eating a healthy, calorie controlled diet is not only the most effective long term solution but also the most enjoyable.

    As mentioned before, this is not a healthy way to lose weight. The salt water flush should do as it says on the tin, i.e. “flush”. If you are in any doubt then do not do this.

    I have gone on this fast 3 times for a minimum of 30 days each time without ANY discomfort what-so-ever! I look like I’m in my 30′s when in fact I just turned 50. The only way one can feel and look younger is through a series of detoxing one’s body, diligent exercise, and reduced calorie eating.

    There is an easy way to transition into the fast that I used that anyone can try. For APPLE-figured persons ONLY, (PEARS are on their own)……Try Dr. Atkins diet for 3-7 days before beginning the fast. One EXCEPTION that should be followed: for EACH protein-meal, make sure to have a cruciferous-vegetable, (lightly cooked) or salad. Do not eat protein in EXCESS. Eat salad-type VEGETABLES in excess!

    I’ve gained back very little of my original shape, yet remain a size 4. I’m getting ready to do the fast again, (for summer 2010). My flat belly is almost a reality.

    Hi ZdC, you really should look for a long term solution. If you start exercising now and eating a very healthy diet, then within 2 months you will see good results. As you are only 15 you metabolism is faster and you will be able to burn the fat off through exercise quickly. Get active, eat healthy. This fast is not a good idea really, it is very hard on the body and it is easy to put the weight back on afterwards.

    so this is my plan for having my diet…please give your comments about this:

    every morning, im taking slenda 10 minutes before my breakfast…its a capsule with resveratrol that can help me to lose weight…also, im taking this 10 minutes before i eat my lunch…
    after eating meals for my breakfast and lunch, ill take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar…
    then for my merienda or break in afternoon, instead of eating something, i’ll just drink 1 liter of nestea fit with 900mg of l-carnitine..
    also every afternoon, im walking for an hour and that serves as my exercise for the whole day..
    and then in evening, i will not eat my dinner..i will only drink a biguerlai tea, its a slimming tea…
    do you think its a good diet for me? i want to loose weight fast!

    Hi ZdC, to be honest I do not think that is a good diet for you. Do you really think that you will burn fat in a quick and healthy way on this diet? You are better off making smaller but healthier portions with high protein and healthy fat content, low carbohydrate, and perform intensive exercises everyday. Walking is good, but you can do better. You have months, so start exercising today, eat healthy and lean.

    Hello all, just a note to anyone in the UK and IE looking to go on this diet, you can find grade B syrup easily, but it’s classified as “grade 2″. It’s the difference between the American and Canadian systems of classification, was a real pain. Day 1 today, lunch break at work, feeling hungry but with good energy and positivity..

    Also the drink tastes great!

Maybe the grading problem is why the people in Manila and Abu Dhabi are also having problems finding the syrup. one other thing,, some people have discussed honey as a substitute, in reading the original book the author clearly states that honey should never be used and won’t work.

    Hi Haley. It is impossible to say how much weight you will lose, there really is no way of knowing. If you want to follow a strict fast, then you should not eat anything at all. However, as we have mentioned before, this is not really a healthy diet. By all means eat some grapes.

    Hi Fallon, the salt water flush can be done any time really, so long as you definitely are not planning on going anywhere that day. The effects can last for hours to most of the day and are obviously unpleasant. You will want to be near a toilet at all times!

    Hi Tooslim. Not really sure how you can get away with something like this without the support of your partner. Not eating a proper meal for 1 day would be hard to hide, 2 weeks impossible. Why not just go on a more restrictive diet that also allows you to start doing daily exercise to burn off more fat. One of the main problems with this fast is that you lose muscle tissue which is really a bad idea.

    Really you should just eat a normal diet but learn to count calories. Reduce mostly carbohydrates and eat a greater proportion of protein and healthy fats in your diet. When eating carbohydrate ensure it is very low GI. This means zero sugar and no bread. Mostly eat leafy green salads.

    I started the Maple Detox on Thursday May 6 weighing 223.5. I want to kick start my body, rid it of toxins and then after 14 to 20 days I will begin a sensible eating style that will include lots of fruits and veggies. I figured this would help my appetite diminish and make me feel better about myself.

    So far so good! Amazing actually! This morning, Saturday 8 of May I weighed in at 216.5! I know it’s mostly water but the boost of confidence and self-esteem it has given me is wonderful.

    A quick question please. Can Kosher salt be used as it is not oxidized?

    No it is not. Start taking a pre-natal multivitamin (note pre-natal multi vitamins do not contain vitamin A that can lead to birth defects when taken in excess). Also ensure you are getting plenty of folic acid as this greatly reduces the likelihood of a spina bifida and some other conditions, like cleft lip and premature birth. Best food sources are spinach, sprouts, broccoli, green beans, and potatoes. Ideally you should start taking extra folic acid before you get pregnant, so take it now.

    Eat a healthy diet and start increasing your strength. Pre-natal yoga is a good option. Pregnancy and labor are very demanding on the body and going on any restrictive diet may harm your baby and make your pregnancy harder to manage. Worry about losing weight again once you have stopped breastfeeding. Good luck!

    That is a good question. At first you will lose weight in the form of stored water and undigested food, if you have a slow digestive system. Then you will start to lose lean muscle tissues and fats. 3 days is not long for any weight loss program though, even a fast, as everyone differs in the way they respond.

    As for a low calorie diet, the best thing is for you to just control your portion size. Carry on with you usual diet but remove everything that is bad, and all refined carbohydrates, sugars, breads etc. Eat low GI vegetables whenever possible.

    I do not recommended diet pills, simply because this fast alone will put a lot of pressure on your body and you do not want to risk any ill effect. The weight will come off, there is no way you can go 10 days on this fast and not lose weight. Keeping it off in the long term is going to require a change of lifestyle though, both in terms of a new diet and more regular exercise.

    Hi, I’m 41, and acquired a stone or so excess baggage over the years. I’ve started the Maple syrup diet and am currently on Day 5. Feel a little low energy by the end of the day, but apart from that no real side effects. I’ve lost just under half a stone so far, which I guess is liquids.

    I’ll try some light excersize tomorrow. And am planning a sensible diet at the end of this to maintain weight loss. I’ll keep you posted.

    Hi Lauren. The only way to maintain your weight loss is by making permanent changes to your lifestyle. So after you lose weight, you need to follow a new diet and exercise more. By follow a diet we simply mean change the way you eat, eat healthy food low in sugar and saturated fat and high in nutrients. Lots of proteins and fibers, less processed and junk foods.

    OK. Well, to do a Maple Syrup diet you obviously cannot do without the Maple Syrup. But, this is a fast more than anything. Some people just have honey instead. There is more sugar in honey than in Maple syrup, so you may want to adjust the amount you eat downwards a bit. Remember, this is a fast. It means you are almost starving your body. So it is not really healthy, but it can help you kick-start your weight loss. A zero-low carb diet works as well, 2 weeks on Atkins and you may see just as much weight loss, with less muscle tissue wastage.

    I’m on Day 12 now. I’ve lost just over a stone. My energy levels have levelled, and whilst I don’t feel like doing a marathon, I’ve able to do some light weights and jogging a couple of times.
    My mental state feels superb!! Apart from the odd blast of boredom which leads me to think of food (which is cured by a glug or two of the syrup mixture!) I have some serious concentration span and the article above is not wrong when it says feeling in a child like state again!!
    I’ve no real ‘gastro’ issues (yet!) though I did awake rudely one night and only just make it to the toilet. That was about 5 days in.
    The biggest issue I’ve faced is what to do with my time now I don’t feel like lying on the sofa and sleeping all the time!!
    I’m looking at doing up to 18 days, which then gives me 14 days to reintroduce solid foods (healthy and no junk!) before leaving for holiday.

    As a “cleanse” maybe. How have you lost weight so far? Maybe carry on as you have been, eat more protein but less carbohydrate and lift weight more. That may be a better way.

    I have been following the discussion with interest. I have to reduce my weight by at least 10 kilos before August – this is for medical reasons. I suffer from GERD from time to time and am heavily anaemia so need to build my blood count.

    And i am wondering if this is a conducive way to shed the weight. my plan is to do the maple syrup for 10 – 14 days and continue with low calorie diet while taking my iron supplement, would it work?

    would i need to do the salt flush and laxative tea? if yes when does come in?

    Hi Rozz. I would strongly recommend that you start a calorie restrictive diet now and exercise. Follow a program if you want quicker results. This method may work for you but I could not say if it is healthy in your condition. Best consult a doctor first. You have 2 months until August so should be able to lose 10 kilos in that time, it is just over 1kg a week. I understand that exercise may be difficult but you should try to do something, even if just more walking or 10 minutes of intensive cardio.

    Your own one Rozz! Take a look at the Glycemic index and only eat foods that are in the low category. Reduce portion size, drink only water.

    So today is my first day. Only complaint is that the cayanne pepper is so strong. I taste it with each sip. I will put less when I make my drink tomorrow.
    I plan to do this for 2 weeks, and will follow-up every few days to let you guys know how its going. I have to lose 20 lbs.

    I am like so desperate. I know I can loose the weight but I always start then stop. I want to loose 60 pounds and I really only want to do the cleanse to jump start my journey to becoming thin oh and I’m going on vacation in 2 weeks. I am becoming discouraged because when I do it the right way it takes too long and I can NEVER fully rid myself of my belly fat. Please advise.

    Hi Diamond, good luck with it. Remember losing weight is mostly a mental challenge, a battle of willpower between you and your natural instinct to eat. Just make sure you win the fight. You obviously cannot lose 60 pounds before your vacation but you may be able to lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks. After the cleanse get active and eat a healthy diet, and never give up. And start you new healthy lifestyle while on vacation, don#t leave it until you get back.

    I have just one question and it is in order to achieve maximum results do I really have to drink the sea salt water????? It is absolutely terrible and it makes me feel sick. I would much rather just drink the laxative 3 times a day. By the way I’m on day two and I’m doing great I just can’t stomach the sea salt water uggghhhhh!!! Please advise.

    No you do not need to. It is part of the cleanse, a “top down enema”, also called a flush. Pretty unpleasant really.

    Green tea is not a laxative. Puerh tea does appear to help some people lose weight (although scientific evidence and an explanation for its effects is in short supply). The best advice really is if you like green tea then drink it. Otherwise do not worry about it. What little research there is suggests that drinking fresh green tea is better than green tea pills.

    Hi, sorry that is probably something used more in the UK. It is just a vitamin and mineral supplement that contains all the main vitamins and minerals, rather than just vitamin C for instance. If I said multivitamin that probably would have helped more! Something like Opti-Women from would be perfect.

    Help… i desperately needed to start the diet…….i cant find the syrup anywhere… the only one i found was the aunt jemima one…so im using that one till i find the grade b syrup…. i broke the diet today (the day i started) =(….but i only ate half a burger in opposed to eating a whole one… i have the biggest weakness for candy and junk food so this is really hard for me… i do want to lose 25 lbs…my bdays in 19 days…how much weight do you think i can lose if i really push myself? is it okay to use that syrup until i find the required one? please help….

    Jordyn, the reason why you have a “weakness” for candy and junk is because you are addicted to sugar. The only way to overcome this unhealthy addiction is to stop eating it. The absolute worse thing you can do while trying to fast is eat half a burger – I assume you meant you ate the bun too? Half a burger is probably more than a meal.

    So I’m a teen, 5’8 and 137, I hate my belly and wish to lose 20 pounds. I know this is an unhealthy diet and that is an unhealthy weight but I seriously just want to be thin.

    So three questions:

    1. Do I have to do the sea salt thing and laxative? I’m pretty sure my mom won’t buy me any.
    2. So there is not eating at all? Not even almond milk, or v8??
    3. Last question will using type b really help the process faster? Or is type a not going to help?

    Please help! I started my first day of the maple lemon drink today is it too late for the sea salt thing!?

    Hi, well, first I must say that at 137 pounds you BMI is only 20.2 which means you are the lower end of a normal, healthy weight. As for the questions:

    1. no you do not have to do the laxative. It is the cleansing part, but a very unpleasant way to do a cleanse. Some dieticians would argue that eating a healthy diet for a week will clean you out just as well.
    2. Yes, no food. It is a fast. By all means eat though, this will be healthier and if you exercise you will learn to manage your weight better.
    3. Type B has less sugar. An alternative is to drink neither and just eat a healthy diet and exercise.

    If you are a teenage that is at the lower end of a healthy BMI then really you should just eat a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, pulses and lean meats, eggs, poultry etc. and do regular exercise to get fit. Plenty of bodyweight exercises will tone you up and make you look a lot better than an underweight person. Curves should be made of muscles not bone and fat.

    So I started this thing two days ago and I’ve lost two pounds, even though that’s alot, I’m still bummed. I leave for vacation in eight days and then will have to sport a bikini. Is there anyway to help boost the fat burning?!

    Hi Nina, are you doing any exercise? This will help you burn fat quicker. To be honest though you have left it a bit late, 8 days is not long enough to lose weight. As for diet, focus on eating low to medium GI foods. The biggest problem for many vegetarians is that they fill up on bread and this contains a lot of empty calories. So highly nutritious, low GI foods only an you will be OK. It is still possible to eat too much healthy food though and put the weight back on, so make sure you are limiting your portions. And, you have to exercise. If you find it hard to motivate yourself serious considered using one of the weight loss programs that are on offer.

    This is really just a fast with a bit of lemon and zest thrown in. Will 6 glasses of this each day cause you to lose more weight than 6 glasses of water? Unlikely. Is it a healthy way to lose weight? No. Do I recommend it over a new lifestyle that focuses on eating a healthy, low to medium GI diet with plenty of intensive cardio and some weight training exercises? No.

    Hi I have just started this cleanse today . I feel ok but have just 2 questions.

    1. is it ok to put the cayenne pepper into a small amount of the drink and then have a glass of the lemonade without the cayenne pepper.

    2. can I use epsom salt instead of sea salt as the sea salt drink makes me gag.

    I am going to do this for 5 days and then see how I feel and take it day by day after that to see if I can go 10-14 days.

    On day 4 and all going well. Yesterday was the first day I felt hungry and I have been making breakfast, lunch and dinners for my 3 kids and husband and am proud of my will power I don’t normally have any. I was 71kg on Monday morning weigh in and this morning I’m at 67.7kg so very happy, but today I have started with the headaches I haven’t had any up till now.     I really would suggest that you actually start by eating a health, low sugar diet. Start a walking program, walk for 30-60 minutes every day. Look at the low GI foods (under dietsin the menu) and eat a low gi diet. You have to give up bread, junk food, cookies, pastry, chocolate, soda. Start now as you mean to go on. MSD can help with fast weight loss but without a longer term plan the weight will come back.

    Hi Melinda, it will certainly affect your performance as you will have next to no energy and your muscles will weaken and be depleted of essential glycogen too. Just eat a leaner diet with less sugar, lower GI foods and more proteins. Add some resistance training to your exercise regime.

    1. Spot reduction of fat is not possible.
    2. Fat is accumulated according to your genetics.
    3. To lose weight you need to reduce energy in (food) and increase energy out (exercise).

    Build some lean muscle, do regular exercise, and eat less and you are on the road to a healthier, fitter, leaner body.

    Hi Steezy, at 18 you are a woman, so you should treat the cleanse no differently from any other adult. The only answer is, no longer than you are comfortable with. Before starting make sure you know what you will be doing when it is over. If you do not have a diet and fitness plan set out, then you are setting yourself up to gain the weight back again very quickly.

    I’m going to do the lemonade diet with a raw food diet. Basically, I’m going to drink my cleanse throughout the day and eat 1 serving of raw vegetables and 1 serving of fruit. Because I found that eating raw vegetable and fruit throughout the day helps me cleanse more. And since I want to lose a couple of pounds I figured I’d put the two together and cleanse for 3 or 4 days to see what happens. After the three days I will tell you my results. Right now my weight is 255 pounds. I should start my cleanse on Sunday the 8th.

    This weight loss system is really a fast and not a diet. However, we recommend that you do eat something and use the system to help reduce calories for a short term faster weight loss method, rather than do the full fast. It is important to be able to remain active and exercise while doing this. So by all means, eat some vegetables.

    Hi. Grilled foods and low GI salads are the best option, no dressing, although olive oil is OK. White rice is something you really should try to avoid in the longer term if you want to manage your weight. 2 small meals a day will be OK. As for the contraception we cannot advice on that, sorry.

    I started this cleansing 5 days ago and on the first 4 days i lost 2.5 lbs a day. on day 5 i lost 2 lbs. The first 3 days are the difficult ones. having passed that you are ok. I have not eaten or drank anything else but the maple/cayenne/lemon/h2o drink
    I have a problem of gallstones and today 2 calcifications came out. dont know from what organ though.
    it really makes your body feel a lot better.

    Jake, you should not take it while doing this fast. Why? The safety information says (or should say): “Exceeding recommended dosage may cause serious adverse side effects including heart attack and stroke. Discontinue use and call a physician immediately if you experience rapid heartbeat, dizziness, severe headache, shortness of breath, or other similar symptoms.”

    This fast may cause dizziness and headaches, so how would you know if the fast was making you feel ill or if the drug was causing more serious problems? Use one method or the other, but not both.

    Hi Debz, yes the idea of the fast is that you do not eat any food, which is why it is hard, unpleasant and not suited to many people. As for exercise, this depends on how much energy you have, but the likelihood is that you will not have the energy to do much, especially as you are working.

    Now, if you were to strictly follow a weight loss plan then you could possibly lose 10kg in a few months. This will be much healthy and make you fitter and stronger, rather than weaker. Also, you will learn how to control your weight properly rather than relying on fad diets to lose weight quickly.

    My words of wisdom – start the healthy diet today, you will still lose weight. If you go on something like the Dukan Diet or follow one of the weight loss plans that we recommend you will still lose weight in the next 5 days, and you will not feel terrible either, plus you will be started out on the right foot. If you choose the Maple syrup way, good luck! You could still use this as a calorie controlled diet for a week before starting a proper fitness and weight loss plan.

    lilidoris, if you do not want to do it do not do it! It is not essential. There are 2 parts to the Maple Syrup diet, a fast and a cleanse. The drink is the fast, the salt water flush is the cleanse. It is not healthy and not recommended.

    Hi Jane. You drink the Maple syrup / lemon detox whenever you want, drink once an hour, or randomly throughout the day when hunger strikes. The salt flush should only be drunk when you have not plans to leave the house, ideally first thing in the morning. We do not recommend this part of the cleanse though.

    So I’ve done the fast for 5 days and I’ve been drinking on average about 6 glasses of the mix per day…I’m not fat though I just want to lose the last bit of unwanted weight that no HEALTHY diets are getting rid of…and I’m realy getting tired of it…so maple syrup diet it is… Anyway I’ve been getting very tired and I have huge BAGS not bags BAGS under my eyes, I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?? But my real question is if I can do the fast for like 2-3days(usually I lose a reasonable amount of weight in this time)and then eat normally for like one day or at least one meal and then do the fast again and then have one meal etc. or will this have a negative affect on my body?(I don’t care if I get tummy cramps-no pain no gain) hahaha I wanna do this because I’m busy writing exams and I feel very tired (if I can’t do this ill just continue as normal haha)… Oh and I would do exercise on the day that I don’t fast:):) I eat healthy anyway but eating healthy and small portions just maintain my weight its not making me lose weight (and it takes too long to long when I cut my portion sizes even more)..oh and I weigh like 53 and I’m 18 years old if that helps with the answering:):) thank you xx

    It is a tricky one to call Carla. If you have essays to write then you really need to be able to concentrate well, and fasting is not a good idea during these times. I recommend that you eat a very low GI diet, restrict calories and eat plenty of fish and poultry to maintain protein levels and healthy fats. Also make sure you drink lots of water. This way you can exercise everyday and you should feel fit enough to do your essays. The exercise will help your sleep better too. Bags under eyes is a sign of over tiredness, and this in itself leads to weight gain.

    Hi, I’ve tried the diet before and lost 11 pounds in ten days with no exercize. It really worked,though I went on vacation and binged though this time, I have 28 days till my homecoming dance and want to lose 23 pounds, I have my sat on the 21st day of the diet, will I have the childlike energy by then? If not then I might end the diet early, but I want an honest answer. Also is it better if I use sugar free smuckers syrup instead of grade b? It had less calories and no sugar?!     Losing 23 pounds in 28 days is extreme. I think you would be better off starting a proper weight loss plan today, following it religiously for the next 28 days, and carrying on after the homecoming dance. At least then you will be having a positive experience that you can talk about.

    Some people say do the flush for a week, some say more, 10 days for example. It is really up to you. Considering how unpleasant it is, and that it really cannot be very healthy, you have to ask yourself if you really want to do the “flush” at all.

    That is actually Grade A. Here are the US/Canadian gradings:

    Grade A Light Amber (US) = No.1 Extra light (Canadian)
    Grade A Medium Amber (US) = No.1 light (Canadian)
    Grade A Dark Amber (US) = No.1 Medium (Canadian)
    Grade B (US) = No.2 Amber (Canadian)
    Grade C (US) = No.3 Dark (Canadian)

    How long? It varies so much on each person that it is impossible to say. Have you made plans for how you are going to continue to eat healthily and exercise after this fast?

    Hi Emma. Really this is a fast and you may struggle to keep up with the exercise. I would suggest a short term restrictive diet, low GI and higher protein. Then in time increase calories a little until you reach a comfortable and steady weight loss.

    Well, a strong lemonade. There are lots of lemons and maple syrup is sweet. Can you use honey? I guess so. Many people ask if it is OK, I always say yes. Nobody has ever come back to say it did not work with honey.

    Hi Emma. Pepper has been shown to increase metabolism, so this is the reason for it. There are also no calories worth counting in cayenne pepper. Grapefruits also boost metabolism, but contain sugar. Personally I would suggest a grapefruit diet though, instead of maple syrup, as this will probably be healthier and still be effective.

    Hi Samantha, the lemon/maple syrup drink will not cause rushed trips to the bathroom. To lose 15 pounds – hard to say. If 15 pounds is your target then I really suggest that you improve your diet and do more intensive exercise. This method of weight loss is not really healthy. Much better to eat a calorie restricted diet and exercise. Aim for 2 pounds weight loss a week, so you can lose 15 pounds in 2 months. There is more chance of keeping the weight off permanently if you take this method.

    Hi Emma, as we have stated in this article, this is not a healthy diet, and certainly not recommended long term. If done long term, this is very unhealthy and dangerous. Really there is no reason to go on a fasting diet such as this. Healthy weight loss is always a calorie controlled diet (i.e. ensuring that not too much is eaten) that still includes all the macro and micro nutrients (protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber and water). This “diet” does not achieve this. Exercise is also essential to maintain a healthy body and a healthy weight.

    This fast does often cause short term headaches, I am not aware of long term headaches though. Your sister should see a doctor about her headaches.

    Hi Motley, just read through this whole thing which has helped me understand this whole fast. I am actually a very active person and have always been on a healthy diet but i just want to try this and see how good it is so I have got just a couple of quick questions.

    The recipe for a days lemon drink says;
    # 5 Squeezed Lemons
    # 1 1/4 cup of organic Grade B maple syrup (if you can get it)
    # 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
    # 10 cups of water

    But I do not understand how many table spoons is ’5 sqeezed lemons’ cos I only bought the lemon juice already in the bottle so how much do i actually have to pour in? Next how much is ’1 1/4 cup of maple syrup’? so basically how many tablespoons & lastly by ’10 cups of water’ do u mean i can use any cup to measure it. I would very much appreciate it if you could break it down 4 me. Thanks

    Doesn’t the lemon bottle provide an estimate of the amount of lemons in it? Just looked up Bevelini Lemon Juice. It says that 250ml contains 8 lemons, so that is probably a good guide. 5 lemons is about 160ml.

    1.25 cups equals about 300ml (1 cup = 236.588237 millilitres)

    (Cups is an old imperial unit of measurement that is still used in America)

    I cannot afford the Organic maple b grade syrup, and because u are saying the maple syrup is to give some kind of sugar to your body while fasting, can I maybe just use a teaspoon of brown raw sugar instead with the lemon, water, and I have brought capsules for the cayenne instead of the actual powder, as I find it easier to take? Also, I have started the gym, can I use a muscle protein low carb shake to take after a workout still while on this fast? Together with metamucil, that I usually take in the mornings?

    Maria, the only way to keep the weight off is to not consume more calories than you require. The biggest advantage of losing weight with healthy diet and exercise is that the teach yourself how to live a lifestyle that ensures that you do not get overweight again. Fasting / crash diets do not teach you this, which is why people fail.

    Everyone that is overweight is overweight for the same reason – too much food. It really is that simple. So learn what a healthy diet is (healthy diet is both healthy food and a healthy amount of food!) and also exercise on a regular basis.

    Hi Shahreen. If you reduce calories by 1000 a day (1000 below your daily calorie requirement, not 1000 below what you eat now) then you you can lose 24 pounds in 12 weeks. If you work hard at your fitness you may lose a little more.

    I do not know what you target weight is, or what weight you need to be to be a size 10 though. You can only do your best, work your hardest. Exercise every day, do weight training workouts twice a week, bodyweight workouts twice times a week and some light cardio (walking, jogging) every day. Keep calories low (about 1200 a day) and no bread, no sugar, no pasta, no rice.

    Hi! Today is my 10th day on this fast and I feel amazing! 3rd day I had a huge headache, the 5th I was little shaking but now everything is great- my skin and hair look great and lots of pounds are gone!
    I really love this bc I was used to eat just once per day (other than that sweets are my weakness) so I think I can keep it for more 10 days at least. Wish I could do this forever- I was drinking as tea and it is delicious! But I am a foodie- I PLAN to eat all kind of foods possible and have a real pleasure eating!
    My question is about reintroducing food… How many days would be good for soup/fruits/veg after this fast? I am thinking about miso soup, dreaming with broccoli (no idea why) and sushi!!! Oh and to lose more weight I am thinking of the protein long after can I start it?
    Thank you so very much for your help!

    PS- I know I will keep eating just once per day- I drink lots of coffee with little hot milk. Is this that bad for the body? I don’t like eating all the time (even cereal bars, yogurt, etc

    Hi Nicole, you definitely need to speak to your doctor before going on a fast. If you are lacking energy due to poor production of red blood cells then a fast may not be a good idea.

    Hi Sonya, cannot say how long it will take for you to lose that weight. If you have a medical condition you should speak to your doctor first. The laxative tea is in addition to the flush. Personally I do not recommend either. Best to eat a calorie restricted but healthy and balanced diet and do more exercise.

    I do not think that the grade makes a massive difference. Some have more sugar in than others, but this is a fast, designed to cause rapid weight loss because you are starving yourself. You really are better off using exercise and healthy eating to lose weight, certainly in the long term.

    Hi I have been on TMC for 6 days now, i have been eating only fruit/salad with it each day as i’m not doing it fully as a fast, I’ve managed to do 1 SWF, i tried another today and ended up vomiting :(, do you thik I can lose the same amount of weight eating like this as if i was fully fasting? As I am only literally eating fresh fruit, veg or salad each day bought from the supermarket. I have not eaten any chocolate, cakes, crisps, meat, sweet or any other bad foods i usually indulge in. Will this vomiting affect the diet in any way? I have been doing so well but think maybe the SWF is not for me! The salt is just too much and just thinking about it makes me heave, I will try a laxative tea instead, what should I eat/drink after vomiting? hope that doesn’t make me vomit.     Nat, all I can say is that I would never do the SWF myself. Of course you will lose weight if you eat fruits and vegetables, so long as you do not consume too much of course.

    Fasting is possibly the worse way to lose weight. Very quickly your muscles will start to waste as your body requires the proteins stored in them. Really the minimum diet anyone should have should provide around 20-30g of protein each day to prevent catabolism (muscle breakdown).

    Restrictive, but varied/balanced diet, plus exercise is always the healthiest way to lose weight.

I decided the start this diet on Friday after work…but I wanted to do it for 10 days. Will I be able to knowing that I have to work Monday-Friday and I cant be in the bathroom the whole time? Remember, healthy food makes the skin healthy, and malnutrition is bad for the skin, so a fast really may not be the best option for you.     You will still feel weak, tired, possibly suffer headaches etc. as you will be fasting, but there should be no reason to rush to the loo. As for fasting with a IUD, you should speak to your doctor first.

    Hi Lala. A quick reminder about this fast:
    1. It is not a healthy way to lose weight.
    2. You will lose muscle tone as well as fat
    3. Unless you follow a diet and exercise plan after the weight will probably come back quicker as the body compensates for weight loss
    4. The maple syrup is really just to provide some energy while on a fast, so honey will be fine.

    A better solution is to start exercising and eating a healthy diet.

    What I really dislike about fasts is that they do not teach people how to manage their weight. They are the ultimate in the yo-yo diet. Unhealthy, short term and unpleasant.

    Is there a quicker way to “lose weight”? Probably not. Is there a healthier way, a way that you can manage long term, a way that will make you look healthier, feel better, be fitter? Yes. That is a diet and exercise plan.

    hi there. i am a law student , doing 8 law subjects a day, i am graduating this april , but still have hard exams up ahead. i really want to try this diet not only becoz of the weight loss but also for the memory and concentration benifits. i know it is not healthy , but do you think if i take energy supplements like bio plus and red bull, i will still have the stamina to continue studying for long hours and will i be able to concentrate in class.

    Shady, do not do it. Fasting will not aid your memory. A feeling or greater clarity of mind is not the same as functional memory. Our brains need a healthy and balanced diet. Fats are essential for healthy cognitive processes – you should consume more oily fish, not less.

    The best thing you can do for your memory and concentration is probably to stop eating all processed food and junks food, eat fish 3 or 4 times a week, eat salads and fruits and exercise every day. Exercise improves thinking and concentration.

    I am thinking about starting te master cleanse on Monday because i need to lose ten pounds by march 19th for my brother’s wedding. I have been eating healthier for about a month now and working out almost everyday but can’t seem to lose weight. I’ve maybe lost about five pounds but still have about 10 to go. I was reading an article that said there are some foods that can be taken with the master cleanse that will not affect it, what kind of fruit is that, like fruit? salad? I would like to do the master cleanse right without solid foods but I live with my mother and she would kill me if she found out i wasn’t eating. any suggestions? Thank you!

    A master cleanse with food is not strictly speaking a master cleanse. A better option would be to reduce calories more, aim for 1200 a day, and increase your exercise. A fast will result in you losing muscle tissue and muscle is vital for maintaining a healthy body and healthy weight. Fasting is really not a good idea for people wanting to be fit and healthy. Take a look at the healthy eating guide and also consider doing some new workouts to burn more fat.

    Do not know if this is normal, however headaches are a side effect of fasting so blurred vision could also be a problem. As mentioned many time, this is neither a healthy way to lose weight or a recommended method.

    You will probably lose weight Megan, but this will be lean muscle tissue as well as fat, and you body will become weaker and it may take longer for your ankle to heal properly.

    Hi, thanks for helping. I actually do excercise and eat well i just get discouraged because i don’t see my weight going down. so i get lay to work out. I am pretty fit and have good muscle mass its just the fat on my belly. it is the hardsst part for me to lose. If i do the cleanse the right way for at least a couple days while still doing light excersie like push ups crunches lunges will i still lose muscle mass?

    You will probably not lose any muscle mass if you do it for a couple of days, however, remember that it is just a fast (starvation diet). You current approach of healthy diet and exercise is probably the best one to stick to, you may just have to tweak that slightly.

    Okay great thank you so much. I will definitely continue working out and eating right. I just want to try this as a kickstart to my weight loss. Tomorrow I start the cleanse. We’ll see how far I go anyway! O and one more question, I want to make the lemonade for the whole day so I just mix the lemons and maple syrup and the water and I can keep that refrigerated? I didn’t like the idea of the cayenne pepper so I read somewehre that I could just buy the capsules and take 2 each day…that ok?

    the gradings were discussed in earlier comments, but really it makes little difference. Its all about sugar content, but this is essentially a fast with a little sugar water to keep you going, so the grade is not that important.

    The sea salt is the “top down enema”. As we mentioned before, this is really not pleasant, not recommended and not really necessary. The fast is not a good way to lose weight either. Best thing to do instead is to eat a healthy, calorie controlled diet and exercise.

    I really cannot recommend that you attempt to lose 40 pounds by going on a fast. This will not teach you how to eat or how to live a healthy lifestyle to prevent you regaining weight. It really is much better to lose weight with diet and exercise.

    Hi Chanel, it is entirely up to you what you do. You really are better off exercising and eating a healthy diet over the long term rather than trying a short term solution. These fasts are not really healthy and are no guarantee that you will keep weight off if you do not make changes to your diet and lifestyle.

    The laxative tea is a part of the “cleanse” yes. It’s only purpose is to help keep your bowels active and you may not require it at all. Remember that the body is always cleansing itself. If you eat a healthy and calorie restricted diet you will essentially be “cleansed” just as well without having to resort to a fast.

    Hi Rashidamuntasir, we cannot advise about the belly button – just let nature sort that out. To make your stomach smaller you need to start exercising as soon as possible. So long as you are taking in plenty of healthy food to produce milk (assuming that you are breastfeeding) you can exercise to get fit which will help your body recover.

    I have all the ingredients and am ready to go. To Motleyhealth, I am 178lbs i want to do it for multiple reasons. But my main question is will I have alot of flabby or saggy skin from losing fat PLUS muscle tone. If I continue to do small toning exercises at home that won’t help will it? I’m concerned about my stomach and butt being too flabby.

    Hi Nikee, it really depends on your body, some people develop loose skin, others tone up well. If this fast is what you really want to do, then just do it and see. Plan now though what you will be doing after you lose weight – i.e. a new diet, lifestyle and exercise regime.

    I read through 100 or so comments but could not find my question. I was wondering if I can occasionally substitute splenda for the maple syrup. I realize that splenda may not be the best for my body but somedays I cannot stomach the taste of maple. I have even tried 3 different brands of maple syrup. Also if this substitution will speed or slow my weight progress. I am at the end of day 3 and have only lost 3lbs…i’m 5’6 and weighed 165lbs.     Rocky, this is a fast. How quick you lose weight depends on how your body responds to fasting. As stated before, it is not a healthy way to lose weight. If you do not like Maple syrup then I would suggest that really you should focus on a healthy diet and exercise to lose weight.

    I was considering this fast but was concerned about some things. some people said they experienced a ‘ring of fire’ on their bum (from the cayenne?). is this true and is there anyway to prevent that? Also, after the fast is completed will I feel sick if I start eating regular food again? I know you said juice, then veggies, etc..but what happens if I start back with a meal ?

    Everyone reacts differently, some people will suffer with the pepper. If you throw yourself back into your usual diet after fasting your body may not react positively. Take it easy, or better still, do not fast.

    You could make up a mixture to drink over several days, just do not leave it for longer. As for salt, regular salt will be as effective, although again, it really is not recommended!

    Hi Shazia, firstly, this is not a diet, it is a fast. What to use instead? Sugar? It makes little difference to be honest. The purpose of a fast is to starve the body. Neither healthy nor a long-term solution to unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise.

    Sorry, I thought you were asking if the fast will be effective, not the exercise. If you have the energy to exercise while on the fast do so. Although the purpose of exercise is to grow the body stronger and without proper nutrition this is not possible. If you wish to exercise while fasting go for it, but it really is not recommended. There are better ways to lose fat and get fit.

    I do not think there is a need to do both really as the sea salt flush is a top down enema, everything should come out. The tea is a daily drink rather than a one-off. At least, I cannot imagine people using the salt flush more than once. Still not actually heard direct from anyone that has done it. Sounds really unhealthy.

    Hi, I am very excited about this fast, I bought the whole concoction w/the pepper, homeopathic drops and the tea. Will start obviously, after New Year’s.

    Anyway, first question is about the drops… haven’t seen it in any of the sites where I am researching… Second question, I read in lots of these sites that marijuana strained drinking water can be added to the recipe, what effect does it have on this fast? I mean, what’s the purpose for it?

    Hi Marmuro. If the “homeopathic drops” you speak of are HCG, then don’t both. In fact, no homeopathic medicine will help you, it’s all snake oil (yes there is a placebo effect, blah blah blah but then you could get a placebo effect from placing quartz crystals around your pillow at night too, but that does not make it medicine). As for marijuana, never heard of that, but marijuana does give you the munchies, and you ain’t gonna lose weight if you have the munchies!

    Hi, First of all thanks for such a quick response… I already begun with the fast, I did the first 3 days (PreDiet) and today is my first with the master cleanse… I am not starving, I feel lighter but it won’t work to see my progress in a bathroom scales every 5 minutes, so decided not to get obsessed with my weight. For me it’s about measures and feeling great… but anyway, I saw this girl Sandy asking if she can smoke… I AM DYING FOR A CIGARETTE!!!! Will smoke affect the results of the fast? I ask this too, because in the book that comes with the syrup, it says I shouldn’t, but I don’t understand how this would affect a weight loss.

    Note: I read about the marijuana thingy, in fact yes, Beyonce allegedly used it as part of the concoction, but it doesn’t say why. I don’t think drinking it would cause any effect anyways.

    Hi, well I spoke yesterday to a representative from the company who sold me the treatment, a nutritionist… she said that actually as it is intended to be a full detox diet, cigarette contains toxins and it stops the natural progress of the fast, hence it stops the weight loss. i have smoked maybe 3 cigarettes in 8 days (including the pre diet) but I couldn’t even finish them because it caused dizziness. Anyway, hope this helps. Since I feel bad about this, I think I will expand the fast for 2 more days and then to see what happens. Cheers.

    You can try. Paprika may not be as effective as cayenne at raising metabolism, however, when fasting it really does not make a lot of difference. However, this really is not suitable for a child to follow. It is a fast, not a healthy diet.

    I did the 3 day prediet (vegetables, fruit, juices), the 10 day fast and now on my 2nd postdiet day. Have to say: it was really hard, but it’s just a matter of will. My biggest test was to cook for my wife and guests.

    I have to say that I weighted and, even though I lost one maybe 2 sizes on my jeans, the scale still says I lost only 3 kgs. so I hope it’s a matter of time, as I KNOW the results. Unfortunately I used an industrial scale and haven’t checked my progress on it, I will next week. If it happens to other people, don’t feel bad, I guess the body can’t reflect a 6-7 kg loss in less than 2 weeks just like that… it’s a work in progress. If you carry on eating healthy afterwards and exercise, it should be fine. For me it was a fantastic boost and it only pushed me to go on. My base will be oriental food, vegetables, chicken, seafood, the use of chopsticks is great as it helps you eat slower and to feel satisfied with less amounts of food. Will keep updated, but as for now, it has been amazing.

    It may do, some people may not tolerate the pepper well. The salt certainly does, and if you take a laxative tea, that may as well. It’s a really unhealthy way to lose weight isn’t it?

    Hi so I started the diet and for almost three days I was doing great but I had a little bit of trail mix and I couldn’t help myself and I continues to eat do u hav any suggestions to help umm will power I guess lol and do u have to drink all ten cups of water and juice everyday?     This fast will likely lead to muscle wastage as well as fat loss. You need a balanced diet to maintain muscle tone. If you do 60 minutes of cardio every day for the next 2 weeks you will probably be in much better shape for swimming.

    OK, are you able to exercise? The thing is, this fast is a TERRIBLE way to lose weight, and you are very, very likely to gain the weight again after the unpleasant experience of fasting. So much better to start exercising and learn to eat healthy.

    Hi… I finished the fast alright, 16 days of sacrifice. I feel like a new man, but I only lost 3 kgs. that most likely will recover, so I recommend to anyone who wants to lose pounds, this is not for you. It helped me quit smoking, it brought order into my life and absolutely I lost a lot of water, lost about one size. now it’s up to me with exercise, a healthy diet (based on oriental food), lots of healthy veggies, steamed rice, no sweets, sodas, occasionally pasta (not all cheesy creamy, home made pasta I mean) and then to drop burgers, tacos, pizza, that’s the recipe. I complained at first, but I did lost measures, which is more than I wanted. now in a row, it’s only a matter to keep up but I don’t suffocate when I jog for 30 minutes as I did before the fast.

    It is up to you. The idea of the tea laxative is to keep your bowels moving in the early days of the fast. Once your bowels are empty there is no point in taking a laxative.

    Being in good shape after birth is actually natural, unfortunately many women do no exercise at all during pregnancy or for a long time after giving birth.

    Hi K, you will gain weight quickly if you revert to your previous diet and lifestyle. Metabolism may be slowed, but really the most common reason people regain weight is simply because they start eating too much again. And this is why fasting is a pretty rubbish way to lose weight, whereas healthy eating and exercise is an excellent way to lose weight.

    I have two questions for you. First, I take Metamucil usually one to three times daily in water to keep things moving. I know there are some carbs in there, would that affect my results, maybe instead of doing that salt water flush? Secondly, I have cayenne pepper capsules that I had taken in the past to boost my metabolism (hypothyroid), would it work if I took the capsules with the drink?     Hi Brooke, to be honest it probably does not make a lot of difference whether you take cayenne capsules or powder – the key part of this weight loss method is that you are starving the body. Taking Metamucil is probably healthier than drinking salt water too.

    Hi Neo. If you are eating bread you are not fasting. Coarse sea salt should be the same, it should all be fully dissolved in water before being drunk, in accordance with the salt water flush. Really not advisable to do the salt water flush though. Eat a high fiber diet and your bowels will be cleaned within 3-4 days.

    I think the most important point to recognise is educate yourself before you emabark on this Fast.I had been reading this page for over two weeks before i started.This is day two for me .Day One was Horrid but I controlled myself.This Morning I had my mix at 5am and did a 45minute spin class.I have never felt so engerised as I did in the class.I was sweating in places I didnt think exisited.I will keep you posted on how much weight loss if any is recorded.

    I just want to add an update. I did this cleanse for only 6 days. While I could’ve lasted and wanted to go longer my bf was very concerned for me so I stopped. My body became very cold and I was unable to warm up no matter how hot it was outside. I was losing circulation. My bf said my face looked pale and that I looked sick. Again I could have kept going and I did lose 9lbs in 6 days but I was afraid I might be causing permanent harm so I stopped. Funny thing is I kept losing afterwards and I’m back to exercising which I was doing before I started. I think I’m better off this way even if it takes longer.

    Thanks for that Rocky. Sounds like you went a day or two too long. If you are cold and pale, you are sick. The body starts shutting down some functions to ensure that the most important organ, the brain, survives. Fasting can be dangerous and you did well to listen to your boyfriend.

    Hi! I’m on this diet for 7 days already and I’m seeing very good results but as I read through the discussions here and on some other sources, I figured that I was doing it wrong perhaps. I did not drink the salt water flush because I really can’t take it neither did I drink the laxative tea. I’m still loosing weight but it’s very gradual already after the 5th day. Do you think that’s because I didn’t have the enema?

    Another thing, it’s very difficult for me to buy lemon since we don’t have that on the local wet market ( I have to go all the way to the supermarket in the mall which is quite far) so I’ve been willing to ask if replacing that with “calamansi” will do.

    Hi KC. The whole flush is a bit of a farce if you ask me. Speeding up bowel movement cannot help you lose weight. Simple. Cleansing is mostly a load of nonsense really, although no doubt a lot of people will disgree with me!

    So do the fast, do not worry about the laxatives, just ensure you improve your diet and lifestyle when it is over.

    It is quite an interesting and healthy diet! I have seen some of my friends getting great results doing it.

    Day One – All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

    Day Two -All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

    Day Three -A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

    Day Four -Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

    Day Five -Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

    Day Six -Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

    Day Seven -Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

I read almost everything here , And was thinking really positive about the cleansing… First day i was hungry, second day also, both days i had headaches and took 2 pills 200ml of ibupofren, and had diarrhea at the end of the day, ( probably coz of the medicine)Today i did not had headache but a intense diarrhea, This is normal???     hi, im going on my fifth day of the fast and i was wondering if i could use laxative pills instead of the smooth move tea or salt water flush. unfortunately i cant handle the salt water and im not much of a tea person, alos i havent started any flushing yet, will that be problematic to the weight loss?

    “how often do i do salt water flush?” – a hard question to answer as we really think that it should not be done at all. If you do the “flush”, once should be more than enough. The same really applies to the laxative tea. You really are better off following a low calorie diet and getting some exercise. Fasting is not a good way to lose fat.

    Im 48, Im now 270lbs down from 310 in two months,working out 4-5 times aweek and I work 12 hours a day. I manage a restaurant so Im on my feet all day, will this diet impede my working ability, though somdays I’m lucky if I have breakfast. ?

    Hi Ivor, if you have lost 40 pounds in 2 months from exercising and sensible eating then it is best that you carry on doing the same thing. You are losing weight in a healthy and sustainable way – why try to speed that up with a fast? And yes, you will find it very hard to work 12 hours a day without any food!

    Don’t think so. Kelly Rowland used a low a sugar / low GI diet plan to help lose 10 pounds – as well as regular intensive exercise workouts.

    My name is Nairobi and I been doing the Lemon Fast for six days now and lost a total of ten pounds. Do take in consideration that 4 out of the six I have been attending the gym to help with the weight lost. I am very happy with my results and also very excited about this fast.     Hi Valerie, many people have asked this. Yes, you can try using honey, there is nothing really special about the Maple syrup, it is just giving some sugar to help keep the brain happy. Green tea is OK too. Remember, this is a fast and not the best way to tackle weight.

    Kiaara, if you wish to fast you cannot eat – it will not be a fast if you do. If you cannot face the prospect of eating nothing (we do not blame you!) then instead start a fitness and diet plan. Exercise every day and eat a healthy, balanced diet. 3 meals a day, smaller portions, not snacks, daily exercise. That is the best way to lose weight.

    Hi Naro. Firstly, this is not a “diet”, it is a fast. You can eat fruit from the start, it is best to introduce a varied diet. The speed at which you regain the weight depends on how much you continue to overeat.

    Fasting to lose weight and then returning to your previous eating habits is a waste of time and bad for your health. Adopt a permanent lifestyle change that includes regular exercise and healthy eating.

    MC, the slat water flush will cause you to defecate violently. Do not under any circumstances try this if you plan to leave the house! More importantly, if you are still at school you absolutely should not do this fast. For adults only, and ideally under some form of medical supervision.

    I have done the diet b4 n despite gaining the weight back over a period of time because of my bad college eating habits I was happy. I had used molasses when I di it tho because I was in the islands where maple syrup was expensive. Which do you suggest for me to make my next batch? Molasses or the maple syrup.

    Hi Dee, that really is not recommended. Fasting should never be done if pregnant, and it could possibly affect your menstrual cycle too, which could make conceiving harder. Of course, you may be OK, but it is a risk that you are putting on yourself.

    Hi Erica, I think we covered that earlier. To clarify: The sea salt flush will NOT help you to lose weight. It is unpleasant, and probably not at all healthy.

    And remember – Beyonce does not follow this “diet” to get her body – she exercises hard and eats healthy. Of all the “quick fixes” out there, this method has to be the hardest and most unpleasant you can do!

    I am 17 years old and i actually heard about this diet on a popular UK televion show called “Super-Size VS Super-skinny” I looked at this diet and i was wondering if it was safe for me to try it for maybe 2-3 days?
    What parts of your body most improve from this diet, Eg: Tummy, legs or arms? That question might be confusing. Please tell me if so.

    Some important points:
    1. this is not a diet, it is a fast.
    2. it does not, and cannot, target specific fat

    You could do this for a few days, but it will not achieve a great deal. At 17 years old you really need to ensure you are eating well – your body is still developing and without good nutrition it will suffer. So get active, eat healthy. Exercise 3-4 times a week, don’t starve yourself.

    Hi Motley, if I do this fast for 30 days and continue to eat healthily (with more fruits, vegetables and proteins as well as complex carbs in the diet), would I still gain all the weight I’d lost? As in if I introduce food back slowly? Say starting from fruits and vegetable juices and then solid raw vegtables/fruits etc and so on?

    Hi Sarah, we cannot suggest this. Fasting for 30 days is dangerous. You will lose muscle tissue and put yourself at risk of malnutrition and developing long-term health problems. Don’t do it.

    In answer to the question – you will only regain weight if you eat too much. This rule applies to all diets. Yes, metabolism drops a little, but the real reason why people gain weight after a diet is simple – they go back to eating too much food.

    If you do the fast, do it for a short period. And then introduce foods slowly as suggested. Better to adopt a safer and more manageable eating plan though, such as 16-8 hour intermittent fasting or 5:2 intermittent fasting diet.

    Personally, I am against fasting (as in total abstinence of food for 24 hours or more) as a way to lose weight, so there is no ideal duration. I would suggest looking into the 5-2 fasts (although not strict fasts as you can eat 500 Calories a day) or even the 16-8 diet. Both teach you to limit and control eating, but there is no (or limited) risk of starvation, muscle wastage etc. Remember, Beyonce did this as a matter of urgency when asked by a film producer. She does not do this now.

    Hi Brie. First, this is not a diet, it is a fast. Second, if you drink water, you will not be doing this fast, you will be doing a water fast.

    As for how long, in all honesty, this form of fasting is not recommended. A more popular form of fasting today is intermittent fasting.
