Can A Gastric Mind Band Help You Lose Weight?

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield talking about Gastric Mind BandHolly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield talked with Martin and Marion Shirran from GM Band on the This Morning show. Central to the discussion was how Gastric Mind Band therapy can help save the NHS billions of pounds by reducing the need for obesity related treatments, while also curing the obesity crisis.

What Is A Gastric Mind Band?

A gastric mind band uses hypnotherapy and suggestion to make a person believe that they have had gastric band surgery to reduce the size of their stomach. The therapy takes place in a clinical environment similar to a surgical theatre, and while under hypnosis they also hear the sounds of surgery taking place to further enforce the believe that they have had surgery. The result is a reduced appetite and subsequent weight loss.

The Rising Cost of Obesity – £6 Billion Per Year

Obesity causes more than 30,000 deaths a year in the UK. Being obese, and especially carrying a lot of belly fat, knocks on average 9 years off your life and causes many serious health issues, including heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity costs the NHS over £6 billion a year (almost $8 billion) – the money is spent on a combination of surgery to combat obesity, and treatments for chronic health issues that result from it. To put this into perspective, the UK spends more money on treating obesity than it spends on the police, fire service and judicial system combined.  On top of this, obesity costs the wider society almost £30 billion a year ($40 billion), in terms of lost business, due to employee sick days. The UK expects costs to rise to £9.7 billion a year by 2050, with costs to the wider society to reach £49.9 billion annually. Public Health England (PHE) has made reducing obesity a priority and the government has launched a Childhood Obesity Plan to tackle the problem early.

Why Does GM Band Work?

Gastric bypass surgery is a very effective way to lose weight simply because if forces you to eat much less food – it is impossible to eat too much. However, many people successfully lose a significant amount of weight through a low calorie diet – there are now several popular fasting methods to help achieve this. The problem is not a lack of knowledge about dieting, but a lack of willpower on the part of the dieter – this is where hypnotherapy comes in.

Hypnotherapy, or more specifically, the combination of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and hypnotherapy, helps you to become stronger willed – you literally find it easier to follow a strict diet after the treatment. Your desire to snack is reduced, and you more easily follow a low calorie diet.

In terms of cost, GM Band therapy is around one-tenth of the cost of gastric band surgery. If the treatment can demonstrate a proven track record of helping people to lose weight, and keep it off, it could be adopted by the NHS and replace physical surgery. Not only will it save the NHS money, it reduces the health risks associated with major surgery. Also, more people will able to receive treatment, so the NHS could lower the threshold for receiving treatment. Currently, only those who are considered morbidly obese will be offered surgery – if this treat could be offered to everybody that is obese, or just over-weight (according to the BMI scale) then there is a very real possibility that the obesity crisis could be reversed.
