5 tips that you should consider on your first time on a skateboard

When it comes to getting around using human powered transportation, there is nothing as cool as a skateboard, and it is great way to get your daily exercise too. As a cool person there is a high possibility that you have thought about starting out on skateboards if you have not started already. So that you are cool from day one, here is a list of 5 tips that you should consider on your first time on a skateboard!

Get the right Gear

Just like any other hobby, skateboarding requires some gear for you to start it. You should already know that skateboarding is not really gentle. Therefore, first get a skateboard which suits you. You could ask around from your friends who are skaters or check out online on the best beginner skateboard to get for yourself.

Apart from the skateboard, you will also need safety gear. You don’t want to injure your knees on the first day. Therefore get a helmet, ideal flat skateboard shoes, and pads for your knees and elbow. You could also get gloves as an extra layer of protection. Falling off the skateboard is part of the learning process, so be safe from injury when it occurs.

Start out on a carpet

Getting the right gear does you justice if it is used in the right environment. Everyone around is cruising the streets on a skateboard. However, the street is not the ideal place to start out on your skateboard. As a beginner,  going out to the streets without grasp of the basics of skateboarding will most probably leave you with an injury and a broken ego.

The first problem you will face as a new skater is the lack of balance and it only gets better with time and practice. Therefore, I would suggest starting on a carpet or grass so as to learn the basic movements on a skateboard first. It is important to learn on a softer surface so that in case you fall it will be easier on your body. Ideal soft surface places include a carpet surface or grass. The essence of getting a softer surface is to ensure that you focus on learning without getting distracted by fear of falling.

Get the right basic stance

Once you have the right gear and the right place to start learning, you are good to go. At this point you will realize that you need to get the right stance such as which foot goes in front. The stance that is appropriate for you will be discovered with time as you keep practicing. There are three options that available namely:

  • Goofy – in this stance, the right foot is placed forward especially if you are left handed.
  • Mongo – In this approach, you push yourself with the back foot
  • Regular – this is the popular approach that many people use where you put the left foot forward. 

You should also strive to learn to push off with your foot. This is vital so as to avoid falling off the moment you lift your foot from the board. 

Learn to Break

 Breaking is an important skill that most beginners overlook when starting out. The most basic idea of stopping while on a skateboard is by foot braking whereby you drag your foot on the ground. The procedure of stopping includes the following steps:

  • You need to balance your weight on the front foot followed by carrying your back foot to the ground. 
  • Rather than pushing, delicately drag the underside of your shoe on the ground while keeping the greater part of your weight on your front foot. 
  • When you have made contact with the ground, you can apply more pressure to stop the motion rapidly. 
  • Continue in that position until you grind to a halt, or set your foot back on the board once you’ve arrived at your ideal speed. 

Avoid Tricks

Probably you saw someone doing really great tricks and you thought why not try out. The truth is that skateboarding is cooler with fancy tricks. However, I hate to be the one to break the bad news; it requires proper grasp of the basics before you can start doing the tricks.

If you start out trying to learn the trick first, there is a high possibility that you will fail to grasp the basics making your journey hard on top of the many unnecessary bruises.

Therefore, just start with the basics and as soon as you get a hang of it, you can always proceed to no-brainer tricks. In no time, you will not only be able to use the skateboard to move around, but also get fancy doing it; after all, it is a cool hobby. And you’ll be getting fit too!
