Hitting Your Fitness Goals in 2021

2021 goalsIt’s a new year and that means new years resolutions abound. A new year is arguably one of the best times to begin a new habit or form a new lifestyle change as there is an atmosphere of new beginnings all around. One of the most common new years resolutions each year is achieving one fitness goal or the other.

At the same time, it is a resolution that many fail. So much so that there is a common joke of gyms being full in January each with people attempting their new Year resolution and then are empty by February when they give up – although this is certainly not the case in 2021 while we are still fighting coronavirus! But, this does not have to be you, not even in spirit, as there are a number of tips you can employ to reach your fitness goals this year, some of which follow.

Start Small

A common mistake that is made by people who want to achieve their fitness goals is that they attempt to take on lofty fitness activities without prior experience. An example of this would be a person who has not worked out in years attempting an advanced fitness class. Every year we see people out running on New Year’s Day who are struggling so much that they are not doing themselves any favours – the result is often overtraining, doing too much too soon, resulting in injuries or a sudden dislike of the idea of exercise! Don’t make these mistakes – running and jogging is very healthy and a great way to get fit and stay in shape, so long as it is done correctly.

Doing too much and failing makes you more likely to become overwhelmed and give up easily. Worse so, you run the risk of getting injured if care is not taken. Instead, approach your fitness goals with small goals. For example, work out for five minutes a day your first week and then ten minutes the week after until you reach your goals. You are less likely to be overwhelmed this way.

Make use of accountability tools

It might not be the best idea to simply assume that you can reach your fitness goals on the strength of your own self-control. The millions of people who fail at their fitness goals each year is an indication that this does not always work.

Instead, it is advisable that you make use of as many accountability tools as possible to keep you on track. Many fitness apps have communities that encourage and keep each other accountable. You might also want to participate more in the fitness community, whether it is watching sports events, betting on sports or just discussing them with friends and family.  Additionally, many habit-building apps can also allow remind you to work out each day and track the number of days you have kept to your resolutions.

Choose activities you enjoy

When many of us think of fitness, we imagine grueling workouts rather than enjoyment. This does not have to be so and you are more likely to reach your goals if you choose activities that you can joy and look forward to.

Whether it is walking each day, dancing, swimming, or yoga, find fitness activities that you look forward to and sign up for them. This way, when you think of your next workout, you will be filled with excitement rather than dread.

2021 can be your fittest year ever with the above tips. Put them into practice and hit your fitness goals in no time.
