Can CBD Actually Help Reduce Seizure Threshold In Epileptics?

CBD OilSeizures are triggered by changes in the electrical activity in the brain. Aside from epilepsy, there are other potential causes of seizures such as sleep deprivation, electrolyte imbalances, traumatic brain injury and infections, and drug overdose.

Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is a remarkable compound found in the cannabis or marijuana plant; it’s commonly used as a natural remedy for chronic pains and anxiety. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD isn’t psychoactive or mind-altering. As a matter of fact, research and studies suggest that CBD oil helps treat different types of seizures.

To give you a more in-depth view of this topic, here are more information about the effectiveness of CBD oil for seizures:

How CBD Oil Works For Seizures

The body’s endocannabinoid system is a system of neurotransmitters and receptors that helps regulate body functions such as sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system responses. Cannabidiol is known to work by interacting with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system by modifying its functions.

According to research, the anti-seizure effects of CBD may come from reducing neuron volatility by acting on two receptor groups called GPR55 and TRPV1 receptors.

Where To Find CBD Oil

With the growing demand for CBD oil and CBD-based products, several physical stores such as grocery chains, pharmacies, and medical marijuana dispensaries also offer over-the-counter purchases.

Buying CBD online is a quick, convenient, and secure way of having CBD oil delivered right to your doorstep. Online stores offer a wide range of CBD products such as edibles, tinctures, pills, topicals, and even CBD for pets. You can compare prices and reviews between different brands of CBD products to easily understand the landscape of the products’ consumer market.

However, you must remember to check the THC levels of the CBD oil before administering it as THC is known to trigger symptoms of certain illnesses, particularly, seizures.

Currently, there is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription CBD oil called Epidiolex. It’s used for patients one year old and above for the treatment of two rare forms of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome. It’s also approved for the treatment of seizures caused by a genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).

Research on the mechanisms of action responsible for the efficacy of CBD against seizures is still ongoing. However, the most thorough studies have been conducted on people with one of the three forms of epilepsy that Epidolex is known to treat.

Details about the studies are as follows:

Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is a severe form of epilepsy that usually affects children below four years old. About two to five percent of childhood epilepsy cases are LGS.

Two 14-week clinical trials studied the efficacy of Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures in people with LGS.

Clinical Trial 1

Scientists compared the anti-seizure effect of 20 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of a daily dose of Epidiolex with a placebo. They found that half of the participants who took Epidiolex had a 44% reduction in seizures and half of those who took the placebo had a 22% reduction.

Clinical Trial 2

Scientists compared the effects of 10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg daily doses of Epidiolex with a placebo. They found that half of the participants who took a daily dose of 20 mg/kg of Epidiolex had a 42% reduction in seizures; half of those who took a daily dose of 10 mg/kg of Edpidiolex had 37% reduction, and half of those who took the placebo had 17% reduction.

In conclusion, the participants who took Epidiolex had a significant reduction in seizures compared with those who took the placebo.

Dravet syndrome

The Dravet syndrome is a rare form of epilepsy that’s often triggered by high temperatures. This severe form of epilepsy doesn’t respond well to medication.

However, in a clinical trial, scientists compared the effect of 20 mg/kg daily dose of Epidiolex with a placebo among participants ages 2 to 18. They found that participants who took Epidiolex had a significant decrease in the frequency of seizures compared with those who took the placebo. The Epidiolex group decreased frequency by 39%, while the placebo group decreased by only 17%.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC)

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex is a genetic disorder that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain and other vital organs. The non-cancerous tumors in the brain cause seizures in some people.

In a clinical trial, scientists compared the effects of 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg daily doses of Epidiolex with a placebo on 148 patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. They found that the participants who took Epidiolex had a 48% reduction in seizures, while the participants who took the placebo only had a 24% reduction.

Although the efficacy of CBD for specific forms of epilepsy had been seen, further research is being conducted to know if CBD is effective for the treatment of other kinds of seizures.

You should consult your doctor first if you’re thinking of using CBD oil to prevent seizures or if you’re planning on using it as an alternative to your current anti-seizure medication. Your doctor can help you adjust the doses appropriately and tell you if it may interfere with any other medications you’re taking.
