That is interesting, and not at all surprising. I guess only those that really want to know will look, and then, they probably are not the people in McDonalds anyway ....

I was in a McDonalds at the weekend, one of the new refurbished ones, and I could not see the calorie labels. OK, I could see that they were, but they were not big enough for me to be able to read and therefore make any decisions.

Hi Joe, thanks for your very long comment! We have to be careful with the advice that we give though. So a few questions and points:

1. "Cut out all your sugars (fructose)" - does this mean stop eating all fruit?
2. "Use organic coconut/palm oil & butter in everything" - what is the rationale for this? What do you mean by everything?
3. "Listen to your body" - this is where most people go wrong, their body says "eat" when they shouldn't be!
4. "Calories don’t matter as much as the quality of your food." - this is dangerous advice. Many people are obese even though they eat healthy, high quality food.
5. "Insulin increases & can become chronically elevated when we consume SUGAR in any form" - can you cite some research on this? In all the studies I have seen insulin drops pretty suddenly in most people as soon as blood sugar levels fall (i.e. after it has done its job).
6. "There are at least 30 conclusive studies showing that low carb diets work." - maybe, but studies comparing the effectiveness of a range of diets have concluded that although low-carb tends to be more effective in the short term over a 1 year period all diets perform equally - it really is the willpower of the individual that counts in the long term.
7. "No conclusive study has shown that low fat diet lowers the risk of heart desease." - This study does: "By how much and how quickly does reduction in serum cholesterol concentration lower risk of ischaemic heart disease?" by M R Law, N J Wald, S G Thompson. BMJ Volume 308, Number 6925. "<em>full reduction in risk of ischaemic heart disease is achieved within five years</em>" http://www.bmj.com/content/308/6925/367.full
8. "Low fat eating will lead to multiple diseases in 10-30 years (there are too many to list)." Can you list a few and provide evidence to support this?
9. "BTW – Atkins is a little too low on the carbs." - Atkins explained carbs very well, taught how to use the Glycemic Index. The Maintenance Phase of Atkins allows a lot more carbs than most people realise.
10. "The more people get sick overeating on carbs, the more money Big Pharma & hospitals make." This may be true in some countries, however, they do not regulate the food industry or advertising. Do not blame pharmaceutical companies for providing treatment and definitely do not blame hospitals. The problem lies in society and the government.
11. "70-100 grams of carbs per day works best for me." Dr. Atkins suggested 60-90 grams of carbs a day for those with a low metabolic resistance, so maybe he was not too far out with his suggestions. Remember, the Atkins Diet is not a "low carb" diet but a "controlled carb" diet. He emphasized the importance of eating carbohydrates, especially nutrient dense foods. See "The Wrong Way to Do Atkins", p.223, <em>Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution</em>, 2003 edition, Avon Books. I am not saying Atkins is great, but he is certainly very misunderstood and it is mainly the fault of the tabloid press who have not reported or explained his diet plan correctly that is at fault. The book has over 500 pages of excellent nutrition and health advice, it is a great read.

It's as simple as that: EAT FAT LOSE FAT.
Maybe this doesn't sound well, but Low Carb eating is the way to survive this epidemic.
Forget about this ubiquitous food pyramid.
Cut out all your sugars (fructose), cereals, breads, pasta & junk food.
No trans-fats, very limited amounts of vegetable oils.
Use organic coconut/palm oil & butter in everything. Use olive or hemp oil for salad dressings.
Eat good eggy breakfast. Take a teaspoon of HV cod liver oil every morning.
Listen to your body. It will let you know when it needs any nutrients.
Calories don’t matter as much as the quality of your food.

Unfortunately most people don't understand the importance of nutritious whole foods like eggs, fatty meats, full fat cream, yogurt, kefir, cheese & variety of organic vegetables.
Eat all kinds of properly prepared nuts & seeds along with olives.
Use limited amounts of fruits. No fruit juices of any kind.
Drink plenty of filtered water.
Get enough sleep.

That's how people used to eat 40-50 years ago & there was no obesity epidemic, fewer heart attacks, strokes and very little diabetes.

I'm only 5' 6", but 4 years ago I weighted 200 lbs. Now I'm at 150 lbs and feel great.
My total cholesterol is around 180. All ratios look great.
Low triglycerides (60).
My blood pressure is 115/70 (was 140/95).
My hair and skin look better.
No more back/knee pain, acid reflux.
No more allergies, arthritis in my fingers.
No more sugar cravings.
Never get sick.

I have an office job & only exercise moderately, walking 20-30 min daily. I do occasional mountain hiking or biking.

Unfortunately, if you still believe in the "low fat", "healthy diet" propaganda you will be fat till you die.

If you really care, please look up Weston Price Foundation's website. Then you'll have at least a clue what you've been doing wrong all these years.

Everyone should read this book:
Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes - a science journalist.

It explains that it is hormonal controls of metabolism, mainly through insulin, that causes all the diseases of modern civilization when chronicle elevated. Insulin increases & can become chronically elevated when we consume SUGAR in any form, whether or not it is HFCS or table sugar. The amount of added sugars & ultra-processed carbohydrate foods being consumed, especially here in America and by any low-income families, is truly saddening.

By diseases of civilization I mean, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, and obesity. Wouldn't it be nice if we could decrease the incidence of these devastating diseases?

The research is not new, merely being rediscovered; The now commonly believed hypothesis that excess saturated fat consumption is causing many of theses diseases is once again coming into question with increased rates of these diseases occurring despite the low-fat diet that has been advocated as healthy for many years.

Both the history & science present in this book will open your eyes & change the way you think about food.

There are at least 30 conclusive studies showing that low carb diets work.
No conclusive study has shown that low fat diet lowers the risk of heart desease.
Cholesterol up to 330 mg/DL is not the reason for concern and it’s not causing plaque build-up.
Your liver reacts to any inflammations in your body by sending more cholesterol to fight them.
Notice that if you consume fewer carbs & PUFAs, the inflammation will be disappearing & coincidently your cholesterol level will go down.
Low fat eating will lead to multiple diseases in 10-30 years (there are too many to list).
If you eat low fat, you may look slim, but your hormonal system is totally out of balance.
BTW - Atkins is a little too low on the carbs.
70-100 grams of carbs per day works best for me.

Please do not reply if you are one of those "Big Pharma" reps.
The more people get sick overeating on carbs, the more money Big Pharma & hospitals make.
They just want to keep on making people dumb, ignorant & obese.

Hope this is going to save somebody's life.

Hi Arnold. Why do you keep stopping going to the gym? If you lose weight when you exercise, keep exercising. Or, change your diet and eat less. There is no pill that will magically make you a healthier person. Either exercise more or eat less, or ideally, do a bit of both: healthy diet and regular exercise.

I thought weight loss is easy when I hit the gym. I started losing weight well but everytime I stop it keeps coming back. I don’t know what to do. Do you know any tablet that helps reduce weight without exercise? Am I asking too much here? What the hell are all pharmacy companies doing?

I am not sure about that. People often eat worse food when they have less money, it becomes a comfort. Also people are still eating fay too much with each meal.

I think that the plateau in the States is due to the fact that people are saving money and not eating out as much as before. In Europe, while they heavily fight to keep GMO crops out of their countries, they haven't been able to keep out fructose in many of their products.
