Hi Alexis, it depends partly on how much weight you need to lose. If you are around 5'5'' you need to lose 50 pounds to be a healthy weight. Losing 50 pounds will take around 6 months, based on a healthy and sustainable weight loss averaging 2 pounds a week, so you will not have a flat stomach by June 30th. Take your time, exercise daily, get more active, and eat healthy.

Hi Victoria, while being athletic is extremely useful in keeping slim, poor diet will always mean that you accumulate too much fat. Make sure that your diet is healthy and you are not eating junk food or snacking outside of meals. Plan your food to fuel your body for athletics and healthy growth.

Hi Sailee, it really is a matter of eating a healthy diet (note, not eating "health food") and exercising in any way that you enjoy. We have a page on various home workouts in the fitness section, take a look at that. The 20 minute workout routine is popular. Follow the rules above and you will succeed.

Yes. Cycling is almost entirely an exercise for the legs and glutes. It is like exercising half the body at once. That is not to say you cannot get very fit doing it, it may just not be the most efficient way to exercise.

Thanks -- are you saying then, that cross trainers are even better than upright bicycles because one sits on a bike (i.e. weight is partially supported), and also there is no use of arms on a bike?

Hi Ariana, I do not know for sure, but that does not make much sense. If you are using the same amount of energy (calories) then it should make no difference whether you are leaning back or sitting upgright. However, it is probably better still to use a cross trainer so that you are on your feet (not sitting at all) and using your arms. The more parts of your body that you move, the more calories you are going to burn.

Hi, quick question. I use the recumbent bicycle in the gym but have read on the internet that these are not effective in weight loss and that upright bikes are better. (Recumbent bikes are the ones with bucket seats/back support). Is this true in your view?

Hi! Im 17 years old and weigh 125 lbs. Even though my weight is normal for my height I have an excess of belly fat. I have taken all sugary and fatty foods out of my diet in the past few weeks and have began running, but Ive heard running doesnt make you lose belly fat, it only tones you. Am I on the right track?

Hi Jimmy, there are not special tricks, just eating healthily, eating fewer calories and doing more exercise. Being more active in general will help. Follow the rules above and keep walking everywhere whenever possible.

Hi
I'm a 62 year old male. I've had a weight problem ever since I quit smoking 30 years ago. I'm 5'8" and about a 120 lbs. overweight. I've started a diet and lost about 10 lbs. so far. I would like to know of a way to lose my belly fat. I know walking is good to do, but is there any other things I can do to help lose the belly fat? Thanks

Yes, many studies suggest different methods. Some studies have also shown that for some people eating 6 meals a day stops weight loss dead. It really is not a good idea to encourage someone who is already overweight to eat twice as many meals a day. Only with careful supervision can this be done without the result being more calories consumed.

Different weight loss experts give different convincing arguments and evidences over the weight loss issue but which advice do we need to follow? The answer is the one that best suits our body type and age. Taking small meals 6 times a day is beneficial to health, because one study shows that 6 small meals a day counts to total number calories and not to the number of meals that count.

Hi JazBhadd, the article covers diet and also links to further resources. However, your question does highlight a common error - we eat to maintain or gain weight (muscle ideally) not to lose it.
