Improvements in social welfare and medicine mean that many people born today will be able to live to be at least 100 years old. However, our other modern traits, such as eating junk food, not exercising, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and smoking tobacco mean that many people will cut their life short of this milestone.
BMI Healthcare created the above to help highlight some of our biggest health problems and what we can do to solve them.
Already 1 in 3 children in the UK are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school. Around 5% of teenagers are regular smokers and 25% of young adults binge drink. And it gets worse as we get older.
However, the solution is really rather easy to follow – eat healthier food and be more active. It is what we have been promoting on MotleyHealth for years. The challenge is to not only spread this message, but engage people more with the ideas of healthy eating and exercise. How we actually do that is much harder.
A good TED Talk on this topic is Dan Buettner’s talk “How to live to be 100+“, which discusses diet and lifestyle and how it affects ageing. For something more radical on the topic we recommend that you watch Aubrey de Grey’s TED Talk “A roadmap to end aging“.
