So what does this mean? What is a healthy diet? What should you buy and eat to ensure that you are following a healthy eating regime. The concept of healthy eating is not new, but what constitutes a healthy diet does change. 50 years ago a healthy diet would have looked rather different to that of one today. This simple yet effective approach diet is the cornerstone of our personalized weight loss plan. Optimum Diet and Health Much of the current research into nutrition is concerned with determining the optimum diet for health. It is known that many foods help to combat diseases, and likewise, others cause disease. In an ideal world everyone will know what to eat to ensure that they achieve optimum health, even if the food is not always available. It is important to mention first that there are not really any “bad” foods. A bad diet is not one that includes a few “unhealthy” foods, but a diet that is unbalanced. Sugar, fat and salt are all essential in a healthy diet, but consuming too much is what causes problems. Fortunately he left many notes and journals that have now been made into books, so that we know more about his training methods and philosophies. “Above all, never cheat on any exercise; use the amount of weight that you can handle without undue strain.” – Bruce Lee Bruce Lee divided his routine into specific martial arts training to enhance his martial arts prowess, i.e. weight training, calisthenics, cardio fitness and stretching. If you combine this Bruce Lee workout with a fitness plan you will get excellent results very quickly. Each day Bruce Lee would train to improve his physique and his martial ability. However, Bruce Lee also stated that it was important to never train the body so hard on any given day, to the point where the body is too weak on the following days to train more or to fight. From a martial perspective it is essential to never over-train, as although in the long term intensive training can make the body stronger quicker, in the short [...]

We love MotleyHealth.com

Which Exercise Machine Is Best For You?

For many people joining a gym or a weekly fitness class is not an option, and if you have never been properly introduced to exercise then it can be hard to follow a workout by yourself. So home exercise equipment can literally be a lifesaver. But which is best? There are really 4 different exercise machines that people think of when considering buying a piece of cardio equipment for the home: Treadmill Stationary Bicycle Rowing Machine Elliptical / Cross Trainer They all have their strengths and weaknesses. We really cannot answer the question, “which is best?” – this was deliberately misleading – because each form of exercise can be the best for you, depending on your personal circumstances. Treadmills Treadmills, a.k.a. running machines, are in a way the most basic of the exercise machines. If you can walk, you can use a treadmill. They were invented as a way for runners to continue to train indoors during harsh winters, but are now commonplace in every gym and fitness club. Benefits of a Treadmill As mentioned, they provide a way for you to carry on running when the weather is too miserable to get out (safely). Many people do run in [...]

We love MotleyHealth.com

Cycling For Fitness and Weight Loss

As far as healthy outdoor pursuits go, cycling is one of the healthiest and most social pastimes that you can enjoy. Cycling has many benefits over other forms of exercise, for example, once you have purchased your bike there are very few ongoing costs, unlike with gym memberships. Cycling is a low impact form of exercise and is easy on your joints, unlike running which can cause knee, ankle and hip problems in some people. Cycling is excellent for weight loss. Most people can cycle for much longer at a high intensity than they can run or swim, and therefore burn more calories. You can develop well toned thigh muscles if you perform sprint intervals. Sprints build the fast twitch muscles which are larger and more powerful, and therefore give your legs a sprinters shape. Efficiency of Motion In terms of transport bicycles are extremely efficient, especially when ridden on a good quality road surface. On a bike you can cycle 3 times faster than you can walk while using the same amount of energy. More impressive is that you can cycle around 650 miles on the same energy in 1 liter of gasoline, which would drive a car about [...]

We love MotleyHealth.com

How To Use Protein Timing for Maximum Muscle Growth

Proper protein timing is an important part of your health and fitness regime. If you fail to consume enough protein at the right times throughout the day then you may make smaller performance gains than expected. Also you risk overtraining as you may not be giving your body the fuel to repair, rebuild and replenish muscles after exercise. Protein is essential for muscle growth and repair. Although fat and carbohydrates are also required for muscle function, it is the protein that builds muscle tissue. However, protein is not stored effectively in the human body, so if it is not used it is expelled as waste relatively quickly. This is why regular protein intake is required. How Much Protein Do You Need? The amount of protein you need to consume is something that is often debated in bodybuilding and athletics forums. Some people calculate the daily protein requirements based on your lean body weight, others on your total body weight. Some just suggest a very high amount, taking the approach that if your body does not use it, it will expel it anyway. Whether or not too much protein is harmful is also often debated. Many people speculate that it leads [...]

We love MotleyHealth.com

She suffered from “pre-diabetes” for many years and eventually developed Type 2 Diabetes in 2007. This prompted her to make some drastic changes to her lifestyle and diet, and she is managing to control her diabetes much better now. Important note: Type 2 Diabetes is a degenerative disease, meaning that it will get worse with time. There is no medical cure for it although medicine does help to manage the condition. Long-term health problems such as heart disease and kidney failure are common in patients with diabetes. Sherri Shepherd recently talked about her new book with Dr. Oz on his show. Dr. Oz specializes in bring new diet tips to the masses – although he does not have a perfect track record with the products he discusses.

Exercising With Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib)

Atrial Fibrillation (shortened to A-Fib or AF) is a common disorder of the heart which causes the upper chambers of the heart, the atria, to beat in a rapid and irregular way. The result is that the ventricle is often not properly filled with blood and this reduces the amount of oxygenated blood that flows around the body. Less oxygen means that your muscles and all other cells will not receive optimum fuel (oxygen is required for metabolism). The result is reduced physical fitness.
