Ephedrine Fat Burners – What Are They?

Many people talk about and recommend fat burners as a way to lose fat quicker, but few people bother to find out what they are or even ask if it is safe.

Most fat burners contain a substance called ephedrine. Ephedrine is a stimulant that is found naturally in a Chinese herb called ma huang and it is often combined with other stimulants such as caffeine and aspirin in fat burners.

Fat burners are often used to increase workout intensity as the stimulants help you to push harder than normal. Because of this they help to aid weight loss also, so by working more you use more energy, and therefore consume more energy. Some say that they also help to boost your confidence which means that you think more positively while working out, and as a result work harder.

Ephedrine and caffeine are often combined, which results in them both having a greater effect on you than if they are taken individually. Aspirin is also often added to obtain a prolonged effect. Although more recent research into aspirin has suggested that it can have negative side effects when taken as a complimentary or primary medicine due to problems including internal bleeding.

How fat burners actually work is still not entirely clear. It is thought that they increase your metabolic rate by causing the nervous system to produce more heat, which then burns more calories. Studies have shown that ephedrine does aid weight loss, but only when also combined with a low calorie diet and exercise.

Ephedrine has known side effects. Generally anything over 25mg has the potential to cause unwanted side effects such as a faster and irregular heart beat (heart palpitations), anxiety, increased blood pressure, insomnia, nausea, irritability and dizziness. The ephedrine-caffeine-aspirin stack increases the risks of any of the side effects. Also, more serious side effects such as heart attack and stroke have been reported.

Finally, ephedrine is an addictive drug, so you may find it hard to give up. The risks involved do not make this a sensible option. The potential costs in terms of serious ill health are not outweighed by the benefits.

The International Olympic Committee have banned ephedrine, so please bear this in mind if you are thinking about taking it.
