It could be said that Matthew McConaughey is in the prime of his life. He has reached the milestone that is 40 years of age, and has also finally started a family with his girlfriend, the Brazilian model Camila Alves, and has two children.
However, he is still a fantastically fit actor. Usually Hollywood produces some very well toned actors for blockbuster action movies, such as Hugh Jackman, Vin Diesel, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. Matthew McConaughey however is more famous for his roles in romantic comedies such as The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Failure to Launch. This probably goes a long way to explain why he is such a hit with the ladies!
McConaughey loves running, and has also taken part in triathlons, and is a strong swimmer and cyclist too. He also surfs, and played a surfer in the 2008 film Surfer, Dude. He has been spotted doing press ups mid run too, often stopping to pump out 20 or 30 quick press ups before continuing with his run.
Weight Training with Matthew McConaughey
McConaughey likes to perform a simple weight training routine, which generally involves:
- Shoulder presses
- Chest presses
- Bent-over rows
- Overhead triceps extensions
- Biceps curls
His extensive and intensive running generally mean that he does not do many lower body exercises, instead concentrating on building a solid and ripped upper body.
McConaughey often spices up his daily workouts with some shadow boxing to help improve muscular endurance, speed and agility.
McConaughey is not only a well toned actor, but also very athletic. In 2008 he participated in a triathlon event to raise money for charity in his home town Malibu, California. The triathlon involved a half-mile ocean swim, then an 18-mile bike ride, finishing with a 4-mile run – proof that his muscles are not just all show!
Outside of Acting
There is much more to Matthew McConaughey than just acting though. He is active in the community and has developed a foundation called “j.k. livin foundation“, which is an organization dedicated to helping teenage kids lead active lives and make healthy choices to become great men and women. The name is derived from his philosophy of life – “just keep living”. He formed the j.k.livin foundation in 1996 and it is still going strong.
The foundation works closely with schools to implement health and fitness programs in large inner-city schools which traditionally suffer from having very poor fitness levels amongst students. Lack of open spaces and playing fields often results in school children in inner cities receiving the bare minimum of fitness and sports education. The ultimate goal of the courses is really to keep children interested in school to held reduce drop out rates. Exercise has been shown to help improve concentration and motivation in the classroom.
There is obviously much more to Matthew McConaughey than written here. His body is in amazing shape. He loves working out, and has said that he feels that he only thinks clearly when he has exercised. In addition the the running and weight training he does yoga and other calisthenics. For Matthew McConaughey, his body really is his temple.
