Joel Kinnaman is RobocopJoel Kinnaman is RoboCop / Alex Murphy in the new 2014 remake by José Padilha. In the original 1987 film Robocop was played by Peter Weller. Joel Kinnaman is a Swedish-American actor, his first major role was in the Swedish film Easy Money. He also played Christer Malm in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Frank Wagner in the Johan Falk series. He was almost Thor too, but Chris Hemsworth won that role. He is currently dating Olivia Munn, who was in Iron Man 2 and New Girl.

Boxing workouts

Joel Kinnaman is a keen boxer and has used boxing training to get in shape for previous roles. He has been seen training with Coach Don at the Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, New York.

Boxing provides an excellent cardiovascular workout and works the arms and shoulders. Many gyms provide additional fitness training to help strengthen the legs and core. See our boxing workouts page for some ideas.

Special Forces training

He has trained with Sweden’s Special Forces training. Special Forces training provides a wide range of exercise, mostly geared towards muscular endurance and stamina training. Lots of running, crossing obstacle courses with sprinting, climbing, crawling and wading through water. This is classic boot camp fitness and will also include old school fitness with push-ups, burpees and sit ups.

Weightlifting

Joel Kinnaman hits the weights in the gym to build muscle. He is tall, standing at 1.89 meters (6 feet 2 1/2) and naturally lean, so some serious weight training is needed to tone up.

Powerlifting exercises are excellent for building strength and powerful muscles. The big moves are:

  • Squats
  • Bench Press
  • Deadlifts
  • Cleans
  • Snatch

These big lifts work multiple muscles and are designed to allow you to lift heavier weights. Proper training is essential for cleans and snatches and advisable for the other lifts too. CrossFit classes are a good way to get a foundation in powerlifting and can be cheaper than hiring a strength coach.

Diet

We know that he enjoys eating out and while in London recently he visited the Tamarind restaurant in Mayfair to enjoy a curry.

Apparently Olivia Munn has said that she is not a fan of Swedish food, so Joel’s native food may be off the menu most of the time now. Olivia described how Joel and his family love pickled herring but she is not so keen.

He probably just eats a sensible, clean diet with plenty of protein when lifting and avoids junk food most of the time, i.e. a normal, healthy diet for a fit guy.
