Being Fat and Tired Will Kill You

Apologies for the sensationalist title, but people are generally more likely to sit up and listen when they life is on the line. Several health studies have released their results this week, and it seems that the hard working, overweight, social drinkers amongst us are in dire trouble.

Firstly, obesity is still on the rise. Reports from the UK’s NHS reveal that surgery to treat obesity has risen by 40%. Obesity is now responsible for more heart, cancer and diabetes deaths each year than ever before. Even though new anti-obesity campaigns and initiatives are springing up all the time, the deadly trend continues – people are eating their way to an early grave.

The second of the medical reports out today concerns sleep, or lack of it. Sleep deprivation is now thought to be one of the causes of dementia. Those that do not get a full nights sleep on a regular basis are more prone to develop dementia than those who sleep well. We recently also reported news that sleep deprivation leads to hardening of the arteries. It is also not good if you are tying to lose weight. So have an early night, and aim for 8 hours a night.

Finally, it seems that even responsible drinkers are putting themselves at risk. Just having one glass of wine a day may increase cancer risk. However, research has also shown that a glass of wine can help reduce cardiac risk.

As usual, a large slice of common sense is required to help navigate through the minefield that is personal health. So long as you make an effort to stay in shape, drink sensibly, as part of a healthy social life, and get a good night’s sleep, you are doing as much as can be expected. Enjoy life, eat healthily and sleep sound, and all will be well.
