We recently looked at green tea / wuyi tea, which is being aggressively marketed at the moment. Another so called superfood, weight loss wonder drug is Acai. We are starting to see a lot more advertising for Acai. So, what is it all about?
This is a typical hard marketing pitch that you may well come across:
Acai is a Natural Weight Loss Product that enables people to lose weight and cleansing their bodies faster than most other products on the market. Here are some of the Benefits of Acai that you might not be aware of. These benefits have helped people who have been taking Acai daily to achieve goals and reach new heights in there dieting that they never thought they could.

1) How you Lose Weight with Acai?
When you first Start taking Acai it starts by cleansing and detoxifying your body and ridding it of toxins – then it works by boosting and speeding up your metabolism

So, what is it really?
Acai is a small, round, black-purple fruit, similar in appearance and size to a grape but with less pulp. There is no denying that it is a healthy food. In a study of three traditional Caboclo populations in the Amazon region of Brazil, açaí palm was described as the most important plant species because the fruit makes up such a major component of diet (up to 42% of the total food intake by weight).
The juice and pulp of açaí fruits (Euterpe oleracea) are frequently used in various juice blends, smoothies, sodas, and other beverages. In northern Brazil, açaí (or jussara, which is one of the fruit’s common folk names) is traditionally served in gourds called “cuias” with tapioca and, depending on the local preference, can be consumed either salty or sweet (sugar, rapadura and honey are known to be used in the mix). Açaí has become popular in southern Brazil where it is consumed cold as açaí na tigela (”açaí in the bowl”), mostly mixed with granola — a fad in which açai is considered an energizer. Açaí is also widely consumed in Brazil as an ice cream flavor or juice. The juice has also been used in a flavored liqueur.
Bio-science – Acai Fats – Lots of long words….
Açaí has an exceptional content of fats, including oleic acid (56.2% of total), palmitic acid (24.1% of total), and linoleic acid (12.5% of total), and also contains a high amount of beta-sitosterol (78–91% of total sterols). These oil compartments in açaí fruit harbor dense contents of polyphenols such as procyanidin oligmers and vanillic acid, syringic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, and ferulic acid which were shown to degrade substantially during storage or exposure to heat. Is this good?
Antioxidant activity of açaí juice
When three commercially available juice mixes containing unspecified percentages of açaí juice were compared for in vitro antioxidant capacity against red wine, tea, six types of pure fruit juice, and pomegranate juice (provided by Pom Wonderful, the sponsor of the study), the average antioxidant capacity was ranked lower than that of pomegranate juice, Concord grape juice, blueberry juice, and red wine. The average was roughly equivalent to that of black cherry or cranberry juice, and was higher than that of orange juice, apple juice, and tea.
Acai is not a Replacement for a Healthy Diet
Like green tea, Acai does have some health benefits. It is jam packed with nutrients and antioxidants. But, it is not the best source of antioxidants, or the best source of vitamins either. For native Caboclo populations in the Amazon, it is the main source of these ingredients, however, we have a wide variety of other sources, all of which can provide similar, and in some cases, better health benefits than acai. So, rather than jump on the Acai bandwagon, pop down to the market and buy some oranges and lemons instead.
Acai and Weight Loss
As for the weight loss? Really it is just another marketing con. Snake oil for fat loss. Like Beyonce’s Maple Syrup diet you will lose weight if you eat nothing but acai – but you will be losing muscle tissue, and lower your metabolism, and setting yourself up for a yo-yo bounce and will probably gain all the weight back as soon as you revert to your previous diet.

Thanks for the information. I have been taking Acai for several weeks and it certainly keeps your bowels moving but have not lost any weight but have not put on any either. I guess everyone is looking for the miracle weight cure without the work. If you know of any, please let us all in on it.
I ordered a bottle of Acai but due to illness haven’t used the product—thank you for your update. also, I ordered and used the Zero patch which promises great weight loss without side effect–I was a bit concerned because they did not list the ingredients in the patch. when I received the patches, I placed one on my and my son’s bodies. the next day(today) I looked up the ingredients and boy am I glad I did—the product consists of fucus vesiculosus (a brown seaweed that is high in iodine) and Guarana a product that has the similar effect of caffeine only it is two and one half times stronger than caffeine. I’m deadly allergic to iodine—as soon as I saw the information I ripped the patch off of my skin. Also, both products are not recommended for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. these patches can be deadly–people with normal thyroid function can develop hyperthyroidism –look up the symptoms—it can be deadly. Hi Ann, you did well to look up the ingredients. This should be a lesson to everyone – never use a product without first learning what it is. These weight loss solutions are not medicines and should be treated with healthy scepticism and wariness.
