Run Better with the Right Kit

Running is possibly the easiest way to quickly improve cardio fitness. However, good shoes and clothing is essential to improving your workout. The right running kit will prevent injury, keep you warm in winter, cool in summer, visible to motorists, and also feel comfortable to wear.

The type of clothes you were must be suited to the weather conditions. In warm weather, shorts and a t-shirt is enough, although good wicking shirts help a lot in transporting sweat away from the body. In colder weather you must add more layers of clothes. More layers are better than one thick layer, as they help to trap warm air and also transfer moisture, sweat, away from the body to the outer layers.

You should use light and soft clothes without any sharp sutures, hard edges or large folds. They should sit fairly close to your body, but not so close that you feel squeezed, trapped, or so that your movements are hindered.

The clothes should give good ventilation for moisture and sweat and perspiration through the fabric. The fabric should ideally hold water totally out from the outside, but this requirement is difficult to achieve together with the requirement of good ventilation. There are many clothes on the market which are ideal for running in cold weather. Look for clothes which are made from “wicking” materials – these help draw sweat away from the body to the outer layers of clothing. Also in winter, it is sensible to wear thermal underwear and high visibility clothing. High visibility clothing is essential for safety if you are planning to run on roads in rural areas, or anywhere where there is little street lighting.

If you plan to make running your main exercise, and plan to run long distances, it would be advisable to look for a specialist running shop, that can measure your feet and help you chose the best pair of trainers; or invest in some Nike running shoes. General fitness stores like Kitbag are not always the best place to shop for running shoes, but do sometimes have a good collection. Remember that a good pair of trainers helps to avoid injury.

  1. Not only should you have the right gear for running and exercise, but your clothes should also look cute! When I look cute on the treadmill or outdoors, I always want to workout harder and longer!
Sorry about the girly comment :)
