Cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Could Be Close
|
Irritable bowel syndrome for many years has been considered by many medical professionals to be a psychosomatic condition, i.e. symptoms are caused by mental processes of the sufferer rather than immediate physiological causes. However, it is now certain that IBS actually has biological origins, according to the latest research.
The finger of suspicion now points at raised levels of digestive enzynes called serine proteases, according to a study in New Scientist magazine. Determining the source of this protease activity could one day lead to better treatments. A protease inhibitor has already been tested in Japan wih promising results.
