Joe Calzaghe v Mikkel Kessler (WBC/WBA/WBO super middleweight)
One of the most important matches in the boxing calendar is fast approaching. On November 3rd 2007 Joe Calzaghe (Wales) meets Mikkel Kessler (Denmark) at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Calzaghe holds the WBO super middleweight title, and Kessler the WBC and WBA titles. The winner of the fight will take “the triple” and hold all three titles. This is billed as being one of the biggest boxing bouts of the last quarter century. Calzaghe is in top physical shape and will be fighting on on his home turf with a huge amount of support behind him on the night.
Kessler will certainly be no walk over, having won 29 of his bouts by knockout, but Calzaghe has had an unbeaten stretch of 43 fights, 20 of which have been as WBO champion.
Calzaghe says that he can adapt his style in any way required and that he thinks Kessler is a very one-dimensional fighter. “He’s a very good European-style fighter and I think his style suits me fine.” Calzaghe is obviously brimming with confidence in the build up to this monumental match. This match is receiving huge amounts of interest from the USA, and is proving to be one of the biggest all European matches ever followed by an American audience. Boxing has found its European routes, and the world is watching. As a result ringside seats are selling fast for this match.
