Qiu Hongmei of China sets new weight lifting world
China’s Qiu Hongmei set a new women’s 58kg clean and jerk world record at the Asian weightlifting championships.
The 24-year-old won the competition with a lift of 141kg in Taian, eastern China, beating the old mark held by compatriot Chen Yanqing by 1kg.
Qiu hoisted a total of 241kg, with the 141kg world record in the jerk and 100kg in the snatch.
The 24-year-old medalist won the clean and jerk gold with 141 kg in the Asian Weightlifting Championship one kilogram more than the former world record, set by Chen Yanqing in 2006 Doha Asian Games.
Qiu achieved it in her third attempt after clearing 125kg and 135kg. “I knew I could do it,” she said.
Qiu had planned to break the world record of snatch, 111 kg, also held by Chen Yanqing, and set her goal at 112 kg in snatch. However, she only managed to lift 100 kg in her third attempt after failing twice.
Women’s 58kg class used to be dominated by Chinese veteran lifter Chen Yanqing, 28, as she had held all the three world records. She still holds the records of snatch and the total. Qiu Hongmei tried to break Chen’s world record in jerk in last year’s World Weightlifting Championship, but failed
