Milk in tea ‘blocks health gains’

We have posted several articles over the last few months concerning the various health benefits of all kinds of tea, such as green tea, oolong tea, black tea, Earl Gray, Assam and Traditional English tea for example, but recent research has revealed that adding milk to tea (which is very popular in the UK) drastically reduces the health benefits that the tea can provide.

To remind you if the positive effects of tea:

“A small German study found drinking black tea significantly improved the ability of arteries to relax and expand to keep blood pressure healthy”

but the act of adding milk to the tea block this effect, as certain proteins that are found in milk, called caseins, prevented catechin molecules from dilating blood vessels as the caseins in the milk reduces the concentration of catechine in tea.

So if you plan to drink tea for its health benefits, stick with green tea and oolong, and if you wish to drink black teas, add lemon instead.

Relax with a cup of Earl Gray and a slice of lemon, and drink to your good health.
