Food labelling campaign launched – but idea could be flawed

“Some of the UK’s biggest food manufacturers are launching a £4m campaign to promote nutritional labels.

The labels show percentages of guideline daily amounts (GDA) of sugar, salt, fat and calories in each serving. Other firms use red, amber and green labels – where green is good and red warns not to consume too much – approved by the Food Standards Agency.”

This is possibly good news for consumers, as people should be able to make a more informed decision of what food they purchase based on its nutritional value and whether or not it is healthy. However, how will this be regulated? It will certainly not be in the interests of the producers to label foods red, as this may reduce sales. So will the scheme actually work, or will manufacturers simply distort the facts and place labels that ensure their sales remain stable? And what about quality foods? Most foods are good in moderation, will the consumer see their choice diminished as a result of dropping sales in their favourite high fat / high salt products? And will all products be labeled in a shop?

I believe that this is a move in the right direction, in that many people do need help in making an informed choice when purchased healthy foods, but at the same time it could affect the diversity and quality of the food we have to chose from.Source: BBC News.
