How fish oils help the heart

An article in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology discusses research that claims that for older adults, fish oils help the heart by regulating its electrical activity. Just a couple of meals a week of the right kind of fish - rich in omega-3 fatty acids, baked or boiled, but not fried - will do the job, according to the research.

Scientists analysed data from more than 5000 men and women aged 65 and over in a government funded study. The participants were asked whether they ate fish, what kind, and how often. The researchers compared the answers to those dietary questions with electrocardiogram tests of the study participants.

Stress & anxiety due to unbalanced qi

This is an interesting article concerning research carried out by the Department of Psychiatry at the Saga Medical School in Japan. It looks at the causes and effects
of stress in relation to our chi (qi). This is a helpful reminder of why it is good to practice the eastern arts / methods to help reduce stress. In the west chi is still very misunderstood, however Japan and China especially, the impact of chi on general well being is common knowledge. Doctors often prescribe qigong (breathing exercises to improve the flow of chi) to patients as part of their recovery programs after operations and ill health.

Nutrition, Diet & Stress

The Oregon State university provides some sound health advice to its students in this article. The article goes into some detail concerning the effects of stress on eating patterns, and the knock on effects on brain function.

"the behavior of eating helps to relieve stress by occupying the nervous system with a familiar activity that "discharges" its nervous energy. The familiar and comforting behavior of eating, or the specific choice of foods, creates a change in brain chemistry that is soothing."

Why fast foods are bad, even in moderation

A recent study reported in New Scientist has indicated that poor quality food causes faster weight gain than healthy food even in a calorie controlled diet. Therefore, healthy food is essential if you wish to keep the waist line down. Consuming fewer calories alone may not be the answer. Many diets concentrate on fewer calories in the belief that this will give the results that you are aiming for, however that may not be the case.
