Irish Smoking Ban ‘Improving Health’ -
Researchers say the smoking ban in the Republic of Ireland has cleaned up the air in bars and restaurants and improved the health of the people who work in them. A study at Trinity College Dublin compared the health of workers before the ban in public places came into effect with their health one year on. Professor Luke Clancy confirmed the air in licensed premises was substantially better than before the ban and restaurant workers were healthier as a result.
‘We found a 30 to 40 per cent decrease in shortness of breath, coughs and watery eyes,’ he said.
‘Lung function in the non-smokers also improved.’
He also predicted the longer-term effects would be even greater as his team collected more data.
Scotland went smokefree in March this year.
England, Wales and Northern Ireland will follow suit in 2007.”
