Birth weight linked with IBS

Smaller newborn babies are at greater risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in later life, new research suggests.

In a study published in the journal Gut, Norwegian researchers report finding that people who were below the standard weight at birth were significantly more likely to have reported suffering IBS at some time in their lives.

Those with birth weights of under 1,500g were found to be 2.5 times more likely to suffer the condition compared with those whose birth weight was above 2,500g.

Furthermore, it was found that the lighter babies were more likely to develop IBS much earlier than their heavier counterparts, with a difference in onset time of around seven years reported. ”
